How to set idle screws on solex's Mon, 26 August 2002 05:35 Go to next message
At the moment there all set at about two turns out from fully screwed in, is that ok or should they be further out?
And how do i know if the balancing screw is set right?

I stuffed around for four hours on the weekend with a airflow device and managed to get the twins sucking at about the same rate. Idles at 1800 and I can't get it to go any lower with out stuffing up the air balance. So, I decided that the experts can have a go at it. let you know the result on thursday.

Cheers hehehe

i had to tune my 18rg carbies on the w/end, i've now got them tuned just as well as the pros (did get my old solexs tuned at 3 different tuning places before they realised i had the wrong jets- just goes to show the pros aren't always the best).

I screwed them all the way in, then unscrewed them ALL exactly 1 and 1/2 turns out, then slowly screwed all of them out one after the other just a bit (like no more than 1/16th a turn), the idle should pickup, then repeat this until the idle starts to drop.

goodluck with them.

also while you do that connect a 2nd tacho up in the engine bay so you can see the rpm change as you do it, makes it much easier

picked up the ra 40 after twin solex tuned. idle about 900 rpm. I aked the expert how I go about increasing the idle when I compete in Khanax events. I don't like a low idle as the thing usually stalls when you jamb on the handbrake doing a spin around the flags, yes even with the clutch depressed. His advice is that once the carbys are set up to increase/decrease the idle "DO NOT TOUCH THE AIR SCREWS".. To adjust the idle you turn the throttle body screw on each carby combo (two screws in all) the same amount. be very particular that you only adjust the throttle body screw and not the linkage adjustment. the latter will put the carbys out of balance with each other. also if you adjust one of the throttle body screws more than the other then that will also put the carbys out of balance.

The motor is now running much smoother than before and without the annoying loud pops and coughs that were there before..

Sunday will see me use it at the Mount Cooperabung Hillclimb in Kempsey. I look forward to seeing just what this thing will now do.
