Corolla won't turn off!! Why? AE82

Hi, i'm kind of newbie with cars, but my AE82 corolla cs is refusing to turn off.
After a drive, I switch off the ignition, but the engine just keeps going, jerking and shaking, still going, not switching off, this goes on for a while, until I press the gas down, now, not even pressing the gas down would make it stop. You can smell lots of petrol after it turns off, and when it turns off, it makes a loud wheezing sound.
Does anyone know what is wrong with my car? What can i do to remedy this problem?
The car is a 1986 AE82 CS with 4A-C engine and sedan body.

This is called "engine run on" and it is caused by 1) the engine is running too hot and is pre-igniting 2) the engine has too much ignition advance 3) Cheap shitty fuel 4) carbon deposits within the combustion chamber have built up.
It is defintiely BAD for your engine.

Start by retarding the timing a little.
Check the water level.
Keep an eye on the temperature when you are driving, be sure that your gauge is working correctly, thermostat is working.
If it is an automatic, you can switch it off while it is in gear (drive for example).
You can run premium fuel.
Kind of funny how the possible fixes directly address the problems outlined huh.
You can also learn about motor vehicles by researching the net or the good old fashioned library.

Unlock the bolt that holds the distributor, start the car and turn it a little bit (engine revs drop a little as you retard - all of my cars have required the distributor to be turned clockwise to retard).
OR
Get someone that knows mechanics and ask them to show you.
Try one thing at a time and test the outcome. If the engine runs on while it is still cold, then it is fair to suggest that it is not being caused by the engine over heating.
NOTE
Learning basic engine mechanics off a internet forum is not a good suggestion.

Sounds like timing or overheating. Set the timing to the factory setting and see what difference that makes. Once you know thats right then look at things like over heating and the fuel cut off. Decarbing the head is the last thing that you'll hopefully never get to.

Ok, I've retarded the timing, but it still is the same. I'll have a look at the ignition etc. tommorow.

I daresay it's probly full of carbon etc. - my 'whitey' (KE55) when it had a 4K in it could be driven for an infinite distance with the ignition turned off provided you kept your foot down/revs up! Just for the hell of it I used to do this for several KM at a time regularly, generally to prove to disbelievers that it could be done

So, how would I find out if it was full of carbon? And if it was, would it be something such as pouring in some solvent and wiping clean ?
sorry if i sound damn stupid. haha

you can get this stuff called 'upper engine cleaner' or 'upper cylinder cleaner' in an aerosol... run a can of this through your car and it will remove some carbon deposit... Some people also use water into the throtle...

I have the same problem with my Lancers carby 4G15.
It usualy only runs for 2 or 3 seconds though. I heard it can be the carby causing it *shrug*.

If you pop the clutch while idling stationary does it stall?

What exactly did you retard if it wasn't the ignition timing?
I have always been a fan of a bit of water thru an atomiser with the engine running into the throttle, BUT I will again say - get somebody who knows to show you (water does not compress and hydraulic lock is all bad).

Just be careful with the water thing. I did this a while back in our AE82, & its been a cranky bitch since, missing & running rich at idle, surging, generally not good. When i posted about it someone mentioned that these carbs are notoriously shite & the process can often cause probs on older cars.
I think some crud got lodged in the idle jet when i sprayed water in, but until i finally get off my arse & put this here rebuild kit through it i dont really know.
I know you're getting conflicting info, all i can tell you is what happened to me

tighten your carburettor bolts,
my girlfriends ae82 was doing it, and giving a wheeze at the end, i tightened the carby and it fixed it
well sorta, her cars stuffed, she just learnt that ur meant to change the engine oil, and black goo isnt normal
