smoky 5me cold start

Hi to everyone, im new to your group, infact i only registered about twenty mins ago! i came across it earlier today its really informitve i have heaps to learn. I have a problem and was wondering if anyone had come across it before , my 84 cressdia blows masses of black smoke when cold and really stuggles untill its warm its a hassle, all i know is it has a 5me engine any ideas guys? does this sound expensive to fix? thanks guys for ya help.

Sounds like a cold start injector issue. It would seem that the CSI is staying on for an inordinately long time. Could be a problem with the the cold start injector, cold start switch or the water temp sensor.

is this hard to check? easy to repair? it looks complicated under the bonnet, i wouldnt want to make it worse!

Ok undo the 2 bolts that hold the cold start injector in and block the hole in the manifold with something the engine cant suck in, point the cold start injector into a jar and get someone to start the car, it should spray(not dribble) until the engine warms up (coolent reachs 30c), If it dribbles check fuel pressure,filter and if there ok the ingector is cactus if it doesnt switch off once warmed up the time switch is stuffed, if thats the case let me know and ill post ya one
The cold start injector time switch is the one under the upper radiator hose (brown one) faces the radiator

thanks for the advice! ill let you know wednesday night how it goes. could this cold start injector really cause this amount of smoke ? its thick black stuff almost like a truck! anyway thanks again.

yeah, also something to check is your spark plugs if one is all sooted up maybe one of the main injectors stuck open
