Well here it is, I'm going to build a rally car, and so far I'm looking at an AE86 as a start point. So I need a bit of help as most of my knowledge is of early toyota's so not to sure about these. Time for the questions. if can answer any of them, or give me any webpage links to me info about them that would be great. here we go.
1. AE86, what's the difference between levin, trueno, sprinter?
2. What's the standard setup of the brakes, suspension, and drive wheels?? (coils? ?WD?disc's?)
3. How much to great a pretty straight rolling shell? no gearbox or engine?
4. How hard, and what sort of mods need to be done to put a 4-ag, or 4-agze into one of these? problems and such? am planing for RWD?
5. Best place to get 4-ag, or 4-agze from???
6. Prices for engine?
7. Will I need half cut so I get everything or what?
8. Need the standard specs of an ae86?eg.. weight, tyre size???
9. was the ae86 sold in AUS with the 4-ag??
That's it so far, will add more as I think of them. Thanks

I looking for a car very similer in shape to the ae86, with the hatch back (3 door), it makes it easier when seting up for rallys, as you don't need to mess with fuel tanks, and rear firewalls as much, plus gives more room to put the tool box and first aid kits required, plus need spare tyres and all that, so the hatch will suit it.
further suggestions please.

Get one of those old square Hyundai's. They look just like an AE86. They also come in white so you just have to paint the bonnet black and its all ready to go

I breed them. Soon there will be a new breed of mutant frogs with big balls getting around.

ra40 is a good plan, you get a hatch and you get something that is cheap to get and cheap to get panels for, and not many people will lose any sleep if you take an ra40 out of existence............

as he said, he's making fibreglass moulds, so body panels will cost pretty much the same no matter what chassis he decides to go with.
Since it sounds like you're thinking of professionally competing (?) you might want to check the laws regarding engine conversions - put a gze in there, and you'll likely find yourself up against hybrid monsters. The 4a-ge, however, was released in the sprinter so you can most probably compete in a lesser category.

The RA40 wouldn't be such a bad idea, you can buy a whole car for $20...aren't they alot bigger than the Sprinters, though?

If you are after a sprinter, why not go budget and go for a KE70. It is a pore mans sprinter and will perform really well given the same treatment. I know it's not a hatch but they are cheap as chips and worth looking at.

the RA-40 might seem to be the go to save a bit of cash on the project.
draven : Yes I do plan to compete professionally.
With the class to do with engine size, the first lot of rallies I'd compete in go with the year of the car. so 4ag into an RA-40 would not be an issue.
by the way has anyone done this? 4agze ra-40??
The ra -40 isn't much bigger it's just heavier. so I'll need to stregthen the chassie and put the roll cage in to help conteract this.

RA65, little bit heavier, look like a grown-up AE86. Don't have the ugly headlights of the RA60, plus they have IRS and an F-series diff, and they are already EFI.
Interior is nicer and they are cheap.

i think the RA-40 is the go actually. seems like a cheap to buy and easy car to mod. (my first car was one of these). So I think a 4agze into it will go well.
Just gotta get the weight down a bit from 1000kg's
interior isn't an issue anyway, Rally will have no interior, just aliminium sheet for door trims.

AE71!!!!
all the plusses of a sprinter (nameley A series engine R&P steering) and all in an unassuming 4 door shell.
they do really make a sweet rally thrasher stock so with some mods would be awesome.
whats the weight difference? AE71 is around 930Kg?? i think whats a sprinter weigh?
