Different Sprinter Engine Conversions.

Hey,
I want to chuck out the old 4AC from the sprinter and replace it, but I dont want to be like everyone else and smack in a plain old, overpriced, 4AGE, and I cannot afford insurance for a GZE or GTE and I want more power than is capable of being achieved with a GE.
Unless I am grossly mis-informed and there are ways of keeping the GE N/A and extracting a lot more power out of it?
Can anyone suggest engines that will fit under the hood, I am happy to modify the engine bay to allow for a larger engine.
Or has anyone done any other conversions other than the GE?
And I dont really wanna stray away from the Toyota engines and do the SR20 conversion, but if there are other engines out there that provide power and reliability, then please, INFORM ME!
Thankyou anyone that can provide me with any information, I did do a search, but nearly every result was of people doing GE conversions.
Cheers
-Whitchy-

As with all engine upgrades/conversions, the question to ask is:
"How fast do you want to spend?"
Give us an idea of your budget and we can give you some intelligent answers. I could reel off a whole list of possibilities - an Altezza BEAMS 3S-GE springs to mind immediately, a la Bill Sherwood - but if your budget doesn't stretch that far it's not very helpful advice is it?

rb26 in an ae86? i doubt it. the 1uz fills the engine bay and it's only 700mm long - a lot shorter than the rb26

Chop the firewall and anything will fit.
As for the Altezza engine, I had a close look at Bill's car and I don't remember anything being chopped. I think he had to remove some material from the underside of the bonnet (height was the major problem with that engine) but nothing significant.

Here we go again
But really i few people down here with various engine conversions in ae86s are all rushing to be the first to finish the next type of conversion , V6's , why ? because there is limited room in the side areas of the engine bay for big turbos ,and there light cheap , so you can do the conversion for n/a to turbo after the car is on the road , lots of room infront of the engine for one or two big turbos. Do i need to say again
big turbos

Yes he had to modify the crossmember, but that is practically expected when you're doing engine conversions; you either need to modify the crossmember or the engine mounts, except in those rare cases when then engine happens to just bolt up! What I meant was he didn't have to do any major structural modifications, eg bash the firewall or cut the radiator support panel, to make it fit.
As for whether it's "worth it", that's a difficult thing to quantify. A lot of people would say me putting a 2JZ into an MA61 wasn't worth it, but the grin it puts on my face every time I plant the throttle makes every dollar spent well and truly worthwhile. I'm sure Bill feels much the same about his creation.

Youngy wrote on Tue, 11 May 2004 11:03 | That Altezza 3SGE just did not want to go in really either. I think that had to cut to much in order to make it fit - bad option when there are others that have already been listed that are a better fit.

Like this?
As Norbie said though, it needed a little cut out of the bottom of the bonnet and the crossmember had to be lowered 10mm with spacers. The only otehr change to the crossmember was to weld on the Altezz engine mounts, not that hard to do.
We could have used either a remote vacuum booster or a smaller one, or even put a small bump in the existing one I think.
But, it was a bugger of a job and I wouldn't recommend it at all.

Somewhat OT, but i really love the neatness of your workspace Bill. Totally different to mine. Maybe you could teach me a thing or two.
Or maybe it runs so deeply in my personality it will never change

Rex will restrain himself now but something may escape.
(1) If you cant afford (or can even obtain in the first place) the insurance on two of the easiest and relatively safe engine conversions. What in gods name makes you think that a powerful >1600cc is going to be more insurable. 'Tell im eas dreamin...'
(2) Overpriced 4AGE, are you out of your mind? Rex has seen them go for as little as $400. Tafebum on these very forums got one for $80 complete. $600 worth of DIY rebuild and it's as good as new and ready to do another 100,000+kms.
Rex has never understood the desire to be different when it flies in the face of all sense and reason. There are good reasons why people choose the 'A' family. Because they are a smart & easy choice with much potential.
Bill can do the 3S conversion because he has the skill and funds necessary. Unless you too are similarly skilled or funded please dont butcher another perfectly good AE86 with some hairbrain scheme that will just end up as one more 'abandoned project' in the parts for sale section.
After all that if you still desire Rex's input, how about a 7AGTE. Makes a very good techo project and better still shouldn't require an axe opened firewall etc.
Or better yet, if you want a larger relaible engine, simply do the smart thing and buy a car with a bigger engine.
Be under no allusions about just how good a 4AGE can be. Rex has seen a few 180hp or so 4AGE's. And then there is bills 220hp 4AGE. Make no mistake that is a fair amount of grunt for an AE86 without turning it into an unbalanced and overpowered piece of shit.
One day Rex hopes to own another AE86 and if he finds out there are none left, he will rain shlphur upon those responsible, that goes too for you boneheads smashing/drifting them into the write-offs category.
Rex will leave it at that for now, but just use your brain and be reasonable.
