TA22 - H4 time. Wed, 12 May 2004 06:34 Go to next message
OK, so the sealed beams did an *ok* kinda job. I figured time for something a bit better.

NARVA 72048 are your friend. $85 trade

OLD on the left, NEW on the right ;

what the back looks like with the dustcaps in place ;

and the finished product ;

the above lights are ADR approved when using 55/60 globes. they will run a 55/100 globe if you want, but, no ADR for you Smile

my TA22 originally runs parkers below the bumper, low beam on the far outside lights and hi beam in the middle/outer ; i'm going to change it to low beam on both and hi beam on both while i'm here - far better lighting setup.

FWIW this lense setup also has provision for a parker globe IN the headlight too.

i don't see the wiring as being quantum physics, with, one additional wire being required to go to the middle light ; presently there are only two...

the only modification was the slightest dremelling of the outside frame that holds the lense ; other than that the chrome surrounds screw down in place around the globe and its all good.

Are your headlights running through relays?
If not it is advisable to fit them as there will be extra load on the headlight wiring/switching which will cause premature failure. The added bonus of relays when wired correctly is a better power supply to the headlights giving a brighter light.

Is it legal to have 4 low beam headlights?

90/120 for the outsides and 150 for the insides Very Happy

i had 90/120's in my poor little rolla... were nice and bright and i aimed them extra low so as not to piss off too many ppl.. can see every detail in the road Very Happy

mmmm low beam 2x 90 = 15amps
high beam 2x 120 + 2x 150 = 45 amps!!!!!!!!! holy moly!!!!

if you are using k-mart or other cheapy "horn relays", use one for each light and circuit as they may only like 10A continuous...

there are better relays around that can run 40A continuous, such as the P&B (Potter & Brumfield)
http://www.jameco.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ExecMacro /jameco/searchResult.d2w/report?sort=BPA&searc h=171441

AUD$3.15 or so before postage....
i'm going to grab a few of these when i eventually have relays in my car Wink

i normally use narva relays, never had any issues with them to be honest.

that or the original ones from VNs (fit in pockets well from wreckers)

I love the look of what you're doing with this and it has gotten me thinking...

I want to improve the lighting of the car (it can't get any worse can it?) and the immediate thought is to reduce the load on the light wires by reducing them to switching current only and driving all the headlights from relays. So wiring the original wires to the relays and then wiring the relays to the headlights while keeping the original headlights (at this stage - I will move to better units when I can).

Firstly, is it appropriate to add one relay per pair or better to have one per light? I would have thought that it would be better to have one relay per light in case of failure (so you could at least get home on one light). While doing this, the fuses in the interior relevant to the headlights become less useful and so I'm thinking that there should be fuses installed with the relays as well?

My 22 has only about 3-4 relays in it now. Adding another 2-4 relays plus fuses will make that section of the engine bay fairly messy. What ideas are floating around for installing more relays and keeping the install neat? Does anyone know of an appropriate later model car that would have a fuse/relay box that would be appropriate for this conversion?

Sorry for the ramble...

Cheers,
Dan
