AW11 Steering wobble HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|

hi guys,
just picked up an NA AW11 a couple of days ago and I've got this really bad steering wobble that starts after 60 km/h.
I got all four wheels balanced and it still has a slight wobble ? Whats wrong !?!?!?
Also the clutch is totally gone ... anyone got est. of how much it would cost for a std. clutch ?
I read on some website before that the wheels need to be tightened with a torque wrench any ideas ?!?!
any help is appreciated.
Oh yea .. ive just moved from an AE86 to the AW11 feel really different...

Steering wobble can ba caused by a number of things. If your wheels are balanced correctly, The first place I would look at is the rest of the steering components.
I have no idea what type of set up an AW11 has, I assume R&P and strut either way, check ball joints and all other joints/bushes and make sure there is not excessive movement.
Putting bigger tyres on will amplify this problem and if the effective offset has changed then that will influence it as well.
Take it to a trustworthy mechanic or better still suspension shop for a check up. My guess is something is worn out and needs rebuilding/replacing. This will then mean that you need an alignment which is a good thing to do anyway.
Have fun

I have an Aw11.. Take the rack and pinion out.. there is a plastic bush (looks like a cylinder) inside which goes and gives baaaad freeplay in the wheels..
Also replace your ball joints.
Anndd.. the clutch.. around 250 for parts and do it yourself.. it aint hard.. just heavy

just got my wheels checked out and it turns out that the previous got wheels with the wrong offset, the bloody back wheels dont even sit on the hub, and it's running spacers on the front.
Im not sure but could this be the problem ?
I read on a couple of sites that if you tighten ur wheels too tightly you will warp the brakes, could this be the problem?
Whts the best pipe diameter if i was to change my exhaust, it's an early redtop with TVIS??
corvid: have u got the part number for that plastic bush?
cheers

you'll find a few good write-ups on some AW11 repairs in the links down the left of this site.
http://www.padandwheels.com/mr2/
it's a pity the currency change was high, getting these would be awesome. there's also links to pics etc. on how to fit them (steering rack bush/es).

has it got aftermarket mags on it? if so check if there is a gab between the bore hole of the wheel and the hub centre.. if there is a gap you will need hub rings to fill the gap... very common problem with aftermarket wheels.. if they are stock wheels then ya tyres might be outa round if all front end is ok

Torque settings for all 4 wheels are 76 ft/lb.
Replace steering rack bush, tie rod ends (genuine Toyota only - not cheap sh*t)good dynamic alignment. Get rid of the spacers, get rims with 42mm offset.
If you've still got the problem, sell the car and try again.
Get used to driving the little beast, you'll find they're huge fun on twisty roads.

Im still trying to sort out the problem, and it's really annoying. Just had all my bushes checked and they seems fine, ive gotten rid of the spacers and mags do sit nicely.
Im going to get a wheel alignment and check if that helps, otherwise do you guys think that warped brakes would cause this problem ?
Could it also be my steering shaft?
I found out that wet roads + AW11 = spin outs
I had a really scary spinout 2 nights ago at a huge roundabout I was lucky that there were no other cars on the road at that time! I spun 270deg, didnt even have time to counter-steer, once the tail snapped I just spun
Any tips on driving techniques?

yeah, a tip for driving - SLOW DOWN - coast thru corners and accelerate out of them.
you've only had your car for a couple of days. you don't want to become a statistic.

Ha Ha... Just about every MR2 owner turns it round in the 1st week or so of owning... just be glad it was impact-free and learn from it.
Make sure your lug nuts are torqued to 76lb/ft. Also check you have the centering rings on inside of your wheels if the inner bore is different to the lip on the hub... Sorry dunno the proper name for them. This made a difference when I got them for my aftermarket rims and I couldn't get rid of a steering wobble.
Apart from that, the rotors a notorious for warping. They may need machining or replacing.

adamb131 they are called hub rings...
if all the steering rack ends are ok and you have hub rings on there you shouldnt have a problem.... all it could be is ya tyres they maybe outa round and thast will cause a vibration through the steering.. and also warped rotors can cause a wobble at high speed depending on how bad they are
if the caster is to far back for that car that can cause a bit of a wobble to.

I would'nt get all panicky about warped rotors or steering column just yet, get your wheel alignment first and make sure they balance the wheels properly first! That could be all it is!
Good Luck

thanks for the feedback guys
here's wht i found out
1. the rims tht came with the car were actually 2 different pair of wheels both with different offsets (wtf!?!?!) and the hub rings are actually called bore locators they cost bout $30.00 per ring cause they have to be custom made
2. they checked all my bushes making sure that none were loose and also turned the wheels lock to lock
3. im going to get an on car wheel balancing + alignment sometime this week and see if the wobble goes away
4. i did my lugnuts up at 75 lb/ft
oh well, i really have to see how it goes...
p.s. the wobble is really annoying!!!
btw wht tyres do you guys use which is good for the wet & dry?
Ive got yokohama's A539's running 185/55 on 15inch mags, they are really good in the dry but just real scary in the wet!

mmm.. no1. didnt sound good.
i have them hub ring/bore locators on mine. they are plastic and came with the mags, not custom made at all.
a easy way to check the inner steering rack bush is to jack up either both front tyres or just one (passengers). grab the passengers tyre either side of it (horizontaly), move it side to side. if you feel play there (and even hear a knocking sound) but you can not see any movement in tie rod end or ball joint, then i be looking at replaceing the bush.
shows you how on there.> ttp://www.highandtight.com/bushings.htm
i used to have Khumo Ecsta's, they where good wet and dry. now i use Michellin MXFSport, they are slightly better in both conditions. 205/50/15".

feral thanks for ur feedback
i forgot, when i got it checked the did exactly that there was vertical play on one tyre (driver's side i think) but no horizontal play (which was abit weird) so he reckon's it could be a stuffed wheel bearing .. but that shouldn't really cause the wobble...
p.s. how much did those tyres set you back ? do you also run 205 on both the front and back ? isnt it abit too wide? I was thinking of changing then to 195/50/15

Dood, i used to run bridgestone GIII all around and found that it had more lateral grip than the A539. Its marginally cheaper than the a539 but the sidewalls are slightly softer. Definately more grip going around the fun stuff.
Take it easy

the Michies cost a bit over $200 each (cant remember the exact figure, was a while since i got them).
naw, 205's arent too wide. yes i have them front and back.
a worn wheel bearing can cause a wobble, so i wouldnt rule it out.

okay here's wht ive decided on
1 pair of GoodYear Eagle F1 195/50/R15's for the back and run the same Yokohama's A539's 185/55/R15's for the front, a wheel alignment + bore locators.
I hope the wobble goes away...
If not ill have to start again...
p.s. wht camber/castor & toe settings are you guys runnin ? (AW11s)

Didn't you get the car checked out by the RAA/RACV/NRMA/equivalent before buying ? Trap for young players. ALWAYS get it done, consider it cheap insurance.
Yes stuffed wheel bearings can contribute to the wobble. Get them fixed ASAP. It's easy and not that hard/expensive.
