changing the interior colour

Hello all,
I am currently in the process of taking my interior plastics from brown to black and am having some issues that I hope others have found a way round.
I am using Motospray vinyl dye and each plastic piece is first washed in sugar soap, aloud to dry and then wiped down with prepsol just before painting.
The only issue is, after it dries in some places it bubbles up and this is the start of being able to peel of whole sheets of dye/paint.
How do you get this stuff to stick, steel wool the plastic first?
Give up and get someone else to do it, are there any professional places that do this sort of thing well?
Cheers.

That's wierd .. whenever I have used a vinyl spray.. I have never done all that.. I simply give it a good clean and spray it on... Mine hasn't chipped, faded or peeled.. Maybe it's the sugar soap????

don't use the vinyle spray on just plastic only use it on vinyle get another spray to use on the plain plastic parts, i used vinyle spray on my car been perfect for 3 years no problems, i simply gave my door trims a good scrub down using auto1 wax & grease remover 4L tin is like $12 and did it in the sun so it dried quick i'm not sure what bran vinyle spray i got but it was from auto 1 and was good stuff i've had friends use stuff just up at the hardware and it just turns out dodgy.

just any spray paint is fine on plastics but if u want good plastic paint then get it from a hobby shop and get the Tamiya spray paint but its expensive like $11.95 for a little spray can vinyle spray isn't any good on plain plastic as its got a strange chemical make up which is only good for vinyle and its paint that is made to flex so vinyle spray paint should only be used on vinyle but pretty much any plain acrylic paint will be fine for plastics just make sure you use wax and grease remover before you paint otherwise the paint wont stick.

I just bought a few meters of velour and some glue and now I have a black velour interior! Looks pretty good and feels much warmer than vinyl and plastic. the dash has to be painted though.
(although in my GF's torana we covered everything with 1/2" black shag, the dash, center console, doors, did the carpet in charcoal and the roof in black velour and it looked unreal and only cost about 150 bucks all up!)

Thanks gents,
Havoc I would have to say that it is not the sugar soap (which is essentially just a very strong grease and grim remover) as this is a common method used of cleaning a surface before painting.
The Prepsol should get the surface almost spot on. The can does say that you can use it on plastic/vinyl etc whatever it sounds like. But I have thought about going down the Tamiya paint path with a few dozen cans of polycarbonate paint.
I have scrubbed everything with steel wool just to give it a slight edge that the paint will hopefully hold this time round.

Acrylic paint is the best bet for any plastics but i do recomend using a plastic primer on the bare plastic before applying colour then use any automotive acrylic paint on it for a tuff and shiny finish give it a coat of clear.
My TA22 has a two-tone Magenta cow-fur (doors trims, rear seat, rear side trims and parcel tray) and black fur for the rest (roof, pillars and dash) also removed carpet with Gunmetal hammertone floor with magenta Holographic glitter sprinkled on. it looks pretty awesome and ive got lots of good comments about it

I have had a lot of experience in this area. If it is a polypropelene(think that's how you spell it) the vinyl spray will not stick. It will stick to ABS plastic. To tell the difference the parts are usually marked underneath. ABS is not very flexible and will crack if you bend it where the other is very flexible and goes all chalky when left in the sun. I've tried a plastic primer and acrylic paint and 2pac. 2pac was stronger but for high traffic areas like scuff plates etc. no good. You are better off getting some spray on contact adhesive and covering with black vinyl or stretchable carpet. I actually got my parts flocked which is a method of spraying contact adhesive and then a velour mix, which turned out magic. Hope that helped

Flocked!! That sounds like some sort of Euro porn move....... Where did you get that done? Is it something most auto trimmers are into?!
I think the plastic in an AE86 is ABS. But I'll have to look into it. I will try out the plastic primer and see hoe it goes this weekend.

Most of the dash parts are ABS but the rest of the parts are poly. I have an AE86 and this is how I know. If you are in Melbourne I could find out who did it for me, it cost me about $250 for a lot of parts. I carpeted all my boot parts, scuff plates and kick panels. The dash I used vinyl dye, the rest I had flocked.

Silly question maybe, and just a tad off the original topic. I have an ae93 Corolla SX.
I want to change my interior from grey to black. I have tried spraying the door trims before, but as has been stated above, the paint peeled off almost straight away. I am not sure what material it is (maybe someone can assist here). In the parts that the pain did adhere to, it was really dull, and looked patchy. What do I use to get it looking the way it should? I also want to spray my dash red too, do I use the same stuff even though its a different material? Excuse my ignorance, I have no clue when it comes to this stuff, but don't want to pay a trimmer an astronomical amount for a simple job.

Well Gav,
As I am finding out from info from the gents above as well as my own findings the vinyl dye paints are great on obviously vinyl, come out very well on ABS platics. But are shit for Polypropylene or Polycarbonate plastics.
For those plastics I will be using a flexible plastic primer followed by an automotive acrylic lacquer which I just scored today if that does not do the trick I'm looking to get flocked as Damian has suggested above.
Hope this helps you out.

i know this is something of an old thread but i thought i might rejuvenate it a bit... has anyone had any experience in replacing/overlaying/dyeing fabric in door trims? the fabric parts in my ae86's door trim are looking pretty saggy and dirty and just generally crap, and i thought maybe some dark velour or something similar might be able to be stuck over the top... what would be the best way to do this? big bastard staples? stitching? glue? most of the vinyl looks alright, so i'm in no huge hurry there, although the door-handles could use a respray...
hmmmm.... ideas?

I'm pulling my panels off my door and alongside the back seats in my XX. If you take them off, then unclip the hooks, you can remove the fabric part. Then remove the staples and peel the material off. Some might stay because its stuck to the paneling, but just try.
I'm using red fabric to replace the old stripy stuff, just stretch it out over where it was originally and use a staple gun and glue new stuff in position. Looks a treat!

I also have an interior trimed in fur . it is magenta and cookie monsta blue it only cost about $100 to do including the glue. I done it with the help of Alainve, and vise versa.
Both cars look cool it just takes a little time.
