18RC to 18RG temp sender different?

Hey guys,
I've just installed an 18RG in place of my old 18RC in my RA28 celica, I tried to hook up the temperature guage, but it doesn't seem to register, just wondering if the thermostats, or temperature sending units or something is different between the 2 motors? I noticed there are 2 places on the 18RG to hook up the guage to, I would like to just get my standard temp guage working, any ideas?
Cheers,
Tim

Could be a different resistance thingy inside or it could be broken. Try fitting the rc into the rg hole as it soulds like it has to come out anyway. I looked at the rg un der the house and it only has one

have you tried stealing the sending unit out of your old rc motor and putting it in the rg.
i did this to get mine to work...i always get what looks like a high reading on the guage (the needle is commonly level with or half a mil above the top of the 'T' in the word temp for the RA40 dash, i don't know if this is fully normal or not), but the guage that was in the rg motor just didn't dend a signal. From memory i think the wire is a yellow one with a blue stripe but i would have to verify this.

I would take the old unit out of my 18RC, but I got rid of it with the motor. Does anyone in Adelaide have one I can come and get off of an old 18RC they've got lying around?
Cheers,
Tim

its either broken or maybe the one in your new rg ran a different sort of gauge maybe aftermarket and thats why its doesnt register...best off just to swap it and be safe..

They're definitely not different, all Toyota temp senders work the same. I hooked up a 1972 TA22 temperature gauge to a 1993 2JZ-GTE and it worked a treat.

So how come mine's not working? The temp guage was working fine on the old engine. Could it be that the thermostats are rooted on the new engine? Does anyone have some that I could test it with?
Cheers,
Tim

i have a spare 18rc lying around but it has no sender in it sorry otherwise i would have.
You might not get a correct reading if water isn't getting to the sender or the coolant is flowing through too quickly. when i got mine it had no thermostat in it so it didn't rise much at all for the first half hour or so (water flowing too quickly).
So maybe your best bet would be to go to autopro or similar and grab a new thermostat (8 bucks). And then make your way to U Pull It enter for 1 dollar, pull a sender unit off an 18 rc or similar and it probably wouldn't cost you more than 2 dollars.
i will hunt around to see if i have a sender unit lying around (hopefully not the original broken one that was in my 18rg) and let you know by tuesday but by then you probably would have found one.

maybe the temp sender is just fucked, r u plugging it into the one at the front of the motor or the one hanging out the side.

See what the resistance and continuity is like when the motor is hot and cold, this should tell you if the sender if working or not.
