AE86 Muffler Choice (NA Blue Top) Thu, 13 May 2004 14:28 Go to next message
Hello Again! I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on muffler choice for NA Bluetop. I currently have 2 inch steel exhaust and it makes a lot of noise!! I was thinking of getting a 2.25 Stainless steel cat back and 4-2-1 extractors. I would prefer a very discreet low/deep sound from the muffler so I don't attract cops when revving high. Any suggestions?

Thanks
Erik

Has anyone had experience with those butterfly devices you put in the exhaust? They can be opened and closed by a solenoid i think. The butterfly plate that closes has lots of holes in it, so it still gives a restricted flow.

Anyhow.. thought maybe it would be good as on the freeway and when cruising have it closed and hopefully quieten things down. Then when u want a fang open it.

Any first hand experience with these?

I've got an NA redtop, 2.25" mandrel bent exhaust, running the standard cast iron primaries and custom 2" secondaries (not equal length though), with a dogleg straight through Redback muffler and a straight through spiral Redback resonator and the car sounds pretty good.

At idle is fairly quiet (marginally louder than my stock KE55 4K with 1.5" exhaust) and it's reasonably quiet until you get to about 5000RPM where it starts to scream a bit but if you're driving around town where noise really matters you don't really drive above 5000RPM anyway... Going down the freeway there's no resonance or anything.

What about polished cannons from companies like HKS, JIC, Apexi, Nemisis, Tanabe? Anyone using one? Suggestions? Something quiet till 5000RPM would be nice like that redback exhaust described.

Seriously, if you want something quiet, stay away from the cannons!

Autospeed on-line magazine did a comparison and write up on mufflers a while back. Google it and check it out. IIRC they said that the Genie Tornado and the Genie resonator were among the quietest with the least amount of gas flow restriction.
If you really can't find it, (its a complete free article, series of 3 or 4 actually, but you can't see the spreadsheet or listen to the sounds they recorded, on the Autospeed web site) PM me with your fax number and I will send them to you.
Mitch.
