KE35 conversion

I own a 75 Ke35 with a 85 1.5 engine in it. I wish to upgrade the engine, and 2T, 3T, 2agze and 2ZZ have all been recommended. I'm thinking of going with the 2ZZ. Does anyone have any further iformation on this engine? What did it originally come in? Also, what mods will need to be done in order to complete the conversion?

2ZZ? Good luck. What do you plan to do for transaxle? And everything else for that matter?
By rough order of difficulty;
- 5K (modified)
- 2T-G
- 3T-GT
- 4A-G
- 3S-G
The above options offer sequentially increasing potential and cost. Do you have a budget? What is your intended application for the car? What do you want to acheive?

I got a 2tg in my KE-35, all we did was modify engine mountsslightly, an elect fuel pump added, 5 speed box, and that's it.
was easy enough cos the Japan ke-35 had an option of the 2tg in it last lot of production.

Someone on these forums modified a ZZ motor to RWD configuration and used a T50 box for use in a Locost. It required the fabrication of an adaptor plate to mate the box to the block. Not hard, just tedious.

Yes, the 2ZZ would be way out of my budget, which is 4 grand for engine and gearbox. would a 1G GTE fit? if not i'm now considering a 2T - 3T hybrid

There's some photos and a writeup of the process at http://locost7.info/mirror/1zzfe_adaptor.php for reference.
$4k sounds about the going rate for a 2ZZ-GE unfortunately. 1ZZ-FE on the other hand could be had for ~$1.5k. If you're buying one make sure you get ALL of the loom plus the ignition barrel and original key (ECU integrated anti-theft). Getting a replacement key supplied and recoded is apparently a several hundred dollar exercise
Another possible source for these engines is statutory write-off's at the insurance auctions. Recent model cars that are stat W/O (ie not able to be re-registered) often sell around the $1.5k mark or less apparently. Obviously there aren't many 2ZZ Celica's there but it's worth a look.
Hope this helps,
Dominic

The 2tg/3t hybrid is an easy fit in the KE35 especially with a import TE37 crossmember.

2T/3T hybrid looks like the go. Its 4 grand JUST for the engine and gearbox. I'm from a family of mechanics, so hopefully I'll get enough help from them when I face dilemmas for it not to cost too much more. Im also looking at stiffening the suspension and DEFINITELY putting disc brakes on the front before I do anything else - It doesn't stop as it is

im looking at the same sort of thing, id have to say a 4age conversion seems to be the most favourable, although the 4age is a little rare, its far more common than a 3tgteu, which is also a good conversion.
I have a blue top 4age, and gearbox ready to put into my ke35, i just need to put the jig-saw together!
im still chasing a few answers to that one, but will let evryone know how it goes when the conversion is all done.
