ae86 conversion info needed... Fri, 14 May 2004 14:13 Go to next message
Hey all, Im new to this forum (but not to toyota 4cyl cars)

I am set on purchasing an ae86 sprinter in the next month or two as I have been a fan on the sprinter since I was just a kid.

Keeping in mind I am just finished school, and although I'm totally into cars, do you think gettin an ae86 and doing a 4AGE motor conversion would be in my range of knowledge.. eg. - how easy is it?

How does the car with the 4AGE motor compare in speed to most of the cars going round now like commodore 6's, civics, preludes, non turbo 2.0 s13 silvias etc

Lastly, I'm not sure about the whole redtop blacktop silvertop thing with the 4age's... can someone please help me out?

Thanks very much

Gavin

Prices seem to be going up on them at the moment so youll need a decent amount of money behind you.

You would be better buying a sprinter with a 4age already rather than swapping one into it as it will work out a fair bit cheaper overall. From what the people on here say, its a piece of piss to do though but I havent had the money to attempt it yet Sad

4age's have a decent amount of power but they arent known for straight line speed (unless you have the money for a 4agze or 4agte) so its not good for the traffic light grand prix.

And the colour tops are different generation of motors. From what I have gathered, bluetop is a RWD 86kw 4age, redtop 100kw FWD 4age, blacktop and silvertop's are FWD 20V 4age. Theres also the 4agze's but I dont know anything to mention those. Lots more differences if you care to look it up but thats the jist.

Thanks heaps.... I have around 5-6 grand, and that will be including the car...

How much harder is it putting a 4agze in the sprinter than the 4age, and also, is the 20v 4age harder to put in then the normal 16v? Is it worth the extra effort/money?

I forgot to ask before, what should I look for when buying the actual car. I have had a look at one already, but it was shocking condition... the motor was blowing smoke, gearbox was wrecked, clutch was dead, interior was horrible (even considering age) and the fellow had bodged up rust cuts and fills in which he tried to convince me that it had no rust.

hehe

thanks

$6k will get you a good condition 4age sprinter as long as your lucky enough for one to come your way. There seems to be quite a few being traded hands at the moment.

4agze is worth the effort but it would be outside your budget (unless you pick up a really cheap car and do all the work yourself) and would require quite a decent effort to put it in. Dont know the specifics because I havent considered it as such (too expensive, too hard to insure for my age and too difficult for my little hands on exp).

If you want to try and spot rust on them look at the bottom of the doors, at the bottom of the rear hatch glass (it leaks through ands rusts the boot floor if your unlucky), wheel arcs and the two rear window sills.

6k for a 4age sprinter *MAYBE* possible..
but you'd be pushing it..

finding a clean sprinter and doing it up from there will cost a whole lot more.

rock on.

How much would a redtop 4AGZE out of AW11
retail for does anyone know. Lots of charging
possibilities with lower compressions, stronger
motor.
