ra28/xt130 camber adjuster/ shocks/springs Wed, 28 August 2002 00:54 Go to next message
Hello, i'm currently doing the corona strut, peugot disc, hilux caliper upgrade on my RA28.

Thinking now is the best time to put some camber adjusters on, good shocks and springs.

Currently I have pedders sports ryder shocks and 1" lowered king springs.

I have heard some no-so-good reports about the pedders shocks and the front still sits a bit too high.

What does everyone recommend to run in regards to this? shocks? spings and camber adjusters?

I have seen k-mac make some camber adjusters but are very expensive.

Do koni make shocks for this strut?

Any suggestions would be great!

Thankyou
Joel

I'm using KMAC strut tops, koni yellows and whiteline springs in my ae86, and I'm quite happy. Personally I'd suggest you get the strut tops and some koni yellows, which I'm almost certain you can get for your struts.

Previously I did have peddars springs, with both peddars and KYB adjustable shocks, neither of which felt particularly good on the road.

I've had pedders in my first KE35..... CRAP!.

Get some Konis, for AE92. These will fit in the struts with a 60mm spacer (aluminium - $1Cool each side... You can then drop the car captively up to 5".. not that this would be good for handling, but at least buying an AE92 shock would allow you to cut the strut or do coilover in future without changing shocks again.

read tech articles on website in my signature.

oh, and make sure they are valved correctly for your springs.

i have a TA22 with unmodified XT130 struts in it... bad move, way too long, i've lost almost half of my suspension travel (at the lowered ride height). i have been looking into strut modifications, the most necessary being the shortening of the struts back to TA22 specs. i have contacted both koni and bilstein, and both no longer list strut inserts for a "TA22" strut. bilstein said they can be made custom, but at $417 each!!!! OUCH.

could you maybe help me with a few questions...

1. apart from the length, will the AE92 inserts fit the XT130 struts, in terms of the tube internal diameter???

2. how does the top of the shock meet up with the TA22/XT130 upper spring clamps and steeering bearings?

3. are the AE92 shocks actually inserts? i would have thought they would come as complete struts?

thanks. i'm sure there are more question i want to ask about this, but i cannot think of them right now. maybe i'll remember later. thankyou if you can help me out so far...

Okay, check the link in my signature for some shock comparisons on the GD website.

You can buy replacement struts or inserts.

Koni AE92 (red) that I bought, are the same Outside Diameter as the Corona shock, so no problems there.

They are 60mm shorter body, so I spaced them up with 60mm aluminium spacers, cos I can't afford coilover right now, I'm doing mine in steps.

They have 40mm shorter stroke... So you can go much lower and still be captive. Of course this stroke reduces the amount of rebound/extension of your springs...

The top of the shock is supplied with a 22mm nut, which is too big to be done up in the Corona strut top, I just used the 19mm OEM nut that came with the Corona struts, thread seems fine.

Apart from the spacers, fitting these shocks is just like fitting any other inserts. check the link in my signature for a writeup on how I did it..... Garage Dori are hardout Razz

This is great, thankyou very much for the information.

Would the k-mac camber adjusters fit on the top of these strut inserts still?

Maybe i'm looking in the wrong place but on your website I can only find suspension comparisions. Not how you went about fitting them?

Thanks
Joel

karl

are the tops of the AE92 inserts similar to the TA22 tops... ie is there any modification required in the top of the shock to install the upper spring clamp and steering bearing???

The tops of the AE92 shocks/inserts have a thread as normal.... They are exactly the same as RT132 shocks, apart from being 60mm shorter body, and 40mm shorter stroke.

They are supplied with 22mm nut for the top, but that is too big to fit in RT132 strut top, so just use the factory RT132 nut, the thread is the same.

What are the dimentions of that Peugot disk? I would still recomend RA60 vented disks as they will bolt onto the XT130/RA23 spindal, and you can still use the Hilux caliper if you want.

I have XT130 struts in my corolla, with tarago vented disks and calibers. They have held up ok on the race track, no fade yet. 255 x 21mm I think. RA60 are like 258 x 22mm. And they would be alot lighter than the Hilux caliber.

My XT130 struts are standard internaly, open bath oil shock, only with thicker oil! Works very well. I have welded on corolla spring mounts.

And to adjust camber, I have lengthened the control arms using a saw and a welder.

So..... you're saying the RA60 disc will allow fitment of the Hilux 4pots?

Also, the late model Hilux callipers are alloy, vs the early ones being cast..... (4pots both).
I don't know when they switch to alloy, and how much they cost. I have been quoted ~$150 each for rebuilt 4pots off LN106. I could prolly get better.
I can get new discs for ~$120 a pair, but it would save me money if I can use something instead of the pug rotor, to reduce labour in machining it down and redrilling stud pattern.

no... RA60 discs are too small.... with the hilux caliper bolted to the corona strut, it is required that a disc of 266mm be used as this is the diameter of the pads in position within the caliper...

the pug discs are 273mm, so i reccomend that they are turned down to 266mm to avoid ugly and unnecessary overhang of the pads. this is what i have done! also you say that the RA60 discs are 22mm thick... i think this is too thick as the LN106 calipers will only accept upto 20mm thick without machining them out...

So does the Hilux caliber bolt right onto the XT130 strut, no modifications?

And which hub do you use to get the right disk offset?

And do 14" wheels fit over this combo? I may have to do this.

yes, the LN106 caliper bolts directly to the corona strut with no mods. use the XT130 hub, and the pug disc bolts to it just like the stock XT130 discs, once the holes are enlarged, or better still, slotted outwards about 2mm...

you will then find that to ensure the disc spins true, in the center of the caliper, the caliper needs to be space backwards by about 1mm. i simply used some 1mm washers, and the bolts were the perfect length. the actual bolts i used are longer than the bolts that hold on XT130 caliper, so i used a spare set of bolts that are used to bolt the strut to the steering arm... it really is a "bolt on" upgrade, once the discs are machined to suit.

i had my discs turned down to the 266mm diameter, and the bolt holes slotted to be correct size. while i was at it, i decided some slotted discs would be nice, so i had that done too!!!

Hey Dorkin i was wondering how much it cost you to have your disks turned down to 266mm? And where you had it done?
