Maybe the wrong pulley, maybe something missing, maybe the incorrect timing cover. I would be checking the pulley alignmet with a straight edge and ruler to see how close it is.
Apart from that; it is a difficult problem to work out without seeing it, and without specific knowledge of the engine in question.

On the three MA6x cars I have owned none had rubber on the harmonic balancers. I think you have the wrong one.

the rubber is impregnated.
to dampen the vibrations- i.e. harmonic balancer
i know the pulley is right, i haev compared it with other known 5mge ones.
yellorolla- not sure what you mean about alignment..
yes it is diffuclt and most annoying.
an incredibly simple conversion just keeps getting more and more complicated

think i have found the solution.
the engine originally had the two v-belt alternator belt setup, so it was supposed to use this style crank pulley.
but somewhere along the way, pulleys got broken, and were replaced with ribbed alternator belt style pulleys.
so the new crank pulley had to be machined to fit the old style.
so you guys were right, the pulley is wrong.
thanks for ur help
