AE86 Dash Removal

I am currently ripping out my cracked, sun damaged dash for repair, and I have pulled almost
everything attached to it, but I am stuck in the removal of the instrument surround (highlighted red in image).
I have removed every screw I could find and it is kinda loose, however it is still
attached to the dash. I think it is pressed onto the dash. Im not sure if there is any trick to its
removal or just to use sheer force?
Has anyone pulled this out before?
Could anyone help? Im hesistant to use too much force and break shit.
Thankx. Much appreciated.

Cannot see the pic , but i am guessing that you have not the 17mm nuts that hold the switches in , this also holds the surround , theres also the screws from underneath to the top of the dash , and all the lower trims must be pulled out .

to put that into different words, pull off the headlight and windscreen wiper switches, and you will find more nuts that need undoing.
when you put it bacl together, you will have at least 2 screws left over, this is normal and can be attributed to automatic weight reduction.

one bolt behind the clock surround. a screw at the glovebox latch. three bolts facing downward inside the binnacle after you have removed the cluster. there is also a plastic plug you will need to "pop" out... this is just below the screen vents, directly above the inner end of the glovebox. it'll let go with some gentle pulling on the dash (which, for many of the '86ers on this forum, is something they are already have extensive experience with... )
here is one i prepared earlier ...

while you're in there, maybe you will also consider doing a freshen up on your HVAC and ducting? not a must... but if you do, you could also think about getting your heater core checked. it's all cheap insurance, and not difficult.
i prepared some of those earlier as well:

fresh and pristine in comparison to the extreme-grot-factor shown here:

Cheers all for your help. Norminator, I agree that most 86ers
would have pulled gently over their dash many a time!!!

heh... cost about $300, and well worth it, in my opinion!
pulling the dash isn't really that hard. it would be much easier with 2 people, but i did it on my own no worries.
and you'll love what you'll find in your 20yo ducting. i gave everything a scrub out with truck wash, split open the heater, fan, and AC boxes and cleaned them out, rustkilled their springclips, then i cut new seals out of foam to replace the originals (which by now will all be brittle and powdery...)
depends on how serious you want to get... but the heater core is definitely worth doing if the dash will be out... if the core is good it should only end up costing u an extra $50 or so for the pressure test to be done, and the core cleaned.

$300 and $100 . I've been pulling my dash down to get repaired and sprayed a different colour for between $200 and $250! I think I may look into getting a new one!
Where abouts did you get yours takai for $100?
Sounds a much better option.

"almost" being the operative term.
if i wanted a secondhand dash from another car, i would have bought a secondhand dash from another car...
the price was for my dash, rebuilt, reskinned in black, freight included. did you notice it was black, takai??? and none of the crevasse's it had when i sent it away...

hope this clarifies things a bit for you...

I did at first think it was reskinned in black, but i wasnt sure, thought it could have been the angle or the light.
As for the almost comment, i will change that to mine is in as good nick, bar a single hairline fracture just below the clock surround.
Or at least it will be in as good a condition as soon as i take a sponge and cloth to it and clean off the dust and dirt.
As for being black.... vinyl dye can always fix that.

Ahh ok. Thats exactly the plan for my dash. It currently has around
10 solid cracks! Repair cost is similar to yours norminator. I plan for it to look as prettey as your dash.
