It is really hard to say what the gains/losses will be (if any) without trying them. That said I am a fan of lower overdrive ratios and longer geared diffs (less tailshaft RPM).
I have had both of these boxes behind an 18R GEU, I liked the feel of the 58 better (I didn't break the selector shaft with the 58 and I managed 2 with the 50).

OK everything equal, would it be worth buying a w58 box for 300 bucks if theres nothing wrong with what I've got.

I found that the W50 gave me a quicker 0-100, but the W58 gives a better cruizin rpm.
The W50 was also nicer to shift, and quicker to slam through the gears.
But the W58 is definately stronger if you plan upgrades....

Yeh, I feel the price is not bad, but I still have to see the box.
With the w50 box being better from 0-100, was that with a std diff ratio of 4.1.1. The 18rgeu won't have much more grunt over std, so the w58 box won't be needed. The exercise was just to see the overall gains if any on acceleration and top end.

Get the W58, you'll enjoy the lower revs on the freeway more than the quicker 0-100
