1j or 1g....that is the question... Thu, 29 August 2002 02:27 Go to next message
I have a problem....i need to decide what engine to transplant into my ra28 celica. it already has a 3tgte and w55. i was thinking 1ggte or 1jzgte. i have been told that the 1j will hurt the handling side of things due to its weight. is there anything that can be done to remedy this at all if i go 1j?? is a 1j conversion worth the hassle?? a pig part of my decision will be based on which engine best responds to future modifications when i get power hungry again. any info on this?? the other option i have is to work the balls out of the 3t but it will be a daily driver so it must be reliable. how easily will the 1g go in compared to the 1j??
any info/help is greatly appreciated.......thanks.

The 1G is an absolutely simple swap. The only thing required is a spacer for one of the engine mounts.

The 1JZ is an extrememly painful conversion involving a lot of relocation of things in the engine bay. Plus will kill the handling.

For an RA Celica, there's really no other choice other than a 1G.

So with the 1g.....will my current w55 bolt up.......what can u boot them to safely with standard internats? how well do they perform with upgraded internals/turbo + 'cooler?? is it worth working the 1g?
thanks

Have a look at my web site and follow the links to Matt Green's JZA23 Celica. This is an RA23 that has had a 1JZ conversion. The engine bay pics should be enough to convince you that this is a very difficult conversion!

Definitely go the 1G unless you're prepared to invest LOTS of time and money into a 1JZ project. A tweaked 1G will still go very hard and unlike the 1JZ it won't have a dramatic impact on chassis balance.

The 1G bolted up to my W57.. You just need the bellhousing.

Fuel cutout on the stock ECU is 14psi.

Not sure how much stock internals can handle. I've heard that the MORBST Celica runs 35psi on stock internals... Of course they've gone through a bunch of blocks... Smile

There are a few guys in the club modding their 1G-GTEs at the moment.

One is going the 2.4L route, whilst another is going with rollerbearing turbos... We should see how much power these make at the upcoming dyno days.

FWIW, my 1G-GTE is stock and produced 128.4kW at the last dyno day. This matched a 1UZ-FE which is rated at 194kW from Toyota....

Norbie, your website must be down, i cant get to it.

so the general opinion is that as far as 'bang for your buck' goes, there is no matching the 1g, this is the engine i was leaning towards also. i have heard that the factory ct12's that come with it are real pieces of snot if thats true(because i have no idea) what is a good replacement? is single or twin a better way to go??
really sorry about all the questions
thanks

I have been involved in a number of early celica 1G and 1J conversions so I've had first-hand experience of both. If I were starting fresh again I'd personally go for a 1GGTE or 1GGZE engine for ease of fitment and weight, a pair of 1JZGTE turbo's for good cost/performance ratio and an aftermarket computer system for flexibility.

Remember, at the end of the day you are only trying to push around an 1100 kg car.

$6k is enough, depending on how much of the work you're willing to do yourself.

I noticed on the fullboost site while checking the records, there was a Celica I think with a 1GGTE that does the quarter in around 10sec. I thought it was pretty impressive.

Go for it!

I have an RA28 with a 1G-GTE. I use it as a daily driver and it hasn't skipped a beat. The 1G is a fantastic motor and has plenty of punch for a road car. The great thing about it is that you don't have to butcher the car to get it in and once installed, it works really well. The only down side is that it does feel a little heavy in the front. If the 1J is heaver than the 1G then I think that it would be a bit too heavy.

Either way you'll end up with a fun car

Cheers

That's the MORBST Celica.
