ae86 heater - help please Wed, 19 May 2004 05:27 Go to next message
I've just got my car registered, applause, but the heater dosent seem to be producing any heat, which is a bit of an issue seeing as its starting to get cold.
how does the heater actually work, ie produce the heat (it pushes air fine) is it electrical or mechanical? all the electrical components of it seem to be in order. if anyone has any troubleshooting solutions they would be most helpful, thanks.

Okay, sorta like how your radiator works, water passes through your heatercore(tiny version of ur rad). When you slide your temperature control thing, you are actually opening a tap to allow hot water to enter this heat exchanger. Air pushes thru it and BAM! Hot air is made Smile. Hence why you will notice why your heater doesnt work when the engine is cold.

Quite often the tap will jam or get stuck due to corrosion. I'm pretty sure its only made of copper or brass. Other things that may cause it to not produce heat is the heater core is clogged and sometimes just the rubber hoses are clogged.

You should be able to see two rubber hoses connecting to tubes on your firewall (thing that seperates you from the engine bay). Try squeezing the hoses when the car isnt running and preferably cold. If it feels/sounds crunchy, then the tap or something else has corroded and you need to open her up.

Christ I maybe wrong, someone please tell me I'm right Smile

You're right.

The tap should be mounted on the firewall in the engine bay, just beside your clutch master cylinder.
