aluminium alloy designations and heat treatments! Wed, 19 May 2004 14:38 Go to next message
just thought i'd share a nice page with Ally info

http://shopswarf.orcon.net.nz/alalloy.html

Aluminum alloys grouped by major alloying elements
2XXX Copper (Cu).
3XXX Manganese (Mn)
4XXX Silicon (Si)
5XXX Magnesium (Mg)
6XXX Magnesium and Silicon (Mg and Si)
7XXX Zinc (Zn)
8XXX Other elements

so whenever someone talks about an 7000 series alloy with a T6 treatment, you have half an idea of what they are talkign about

to find information on a specific alloy, go to

http://www.matweb.com/search/SearchSubcat.asp?st=s c&catid=352#nfm

and click on "find" down at 'non-ferrous metals'"aluminium alloy"
there's about 1200 alloys listed.

Cya, Stewart

And for thoes with plenty of bandwidth to play with, here is the official US military aircraft/aerospace materials handbook.

MIL-HDBK-5J 80mb

Probably won't mean much unless you have a knowledge of materials/engineering but it is the so called Bible for material strength properties in the aerospace industry. It also covers steels and other metal alloys.

This document also makes some general comments about fatigue and corrosion susceptability of each alloy.
