mild steel isnt all the best with alot of heat, i would be trying something like stanless if u can get your hands on it.

I would be making the complete manifold out of stanless also, for the simple reasons that an exhaust shop will give you 1 - 3 years warrenty on mild steel and 10 years on stanless... that has be saying something.

stainless would be good. supposedly a good metal to make turb manifolds from.

mild steel would be ok - as long as its thick walled stuff.

Steam pipe is the strongest thing you can use to make the collector. Plumbing supply shops should carry it and it isnt expensive. Albeit it is hard to work with.

Stainless is good also but you need the thicker stuff. Make sure whoever does it does it properly as i have heard a lot of people having problems with stainless ones cracking. The weight of the turbo hanging on it is a factor as well.

I am making it myself

i have the flange made up and the steam pipe bends are all done i just have to do the collector part.

what if i used 10mm mild steel for the collector and got the lot coated in HPC coating (does anyone know how much that would cost)??

thanks all

If you have made the bends and such out of steam pipe, then the collector becomes a given - steam pipe! Really at 10mm you won't be making a collector (it will be a heater box) with 4 pipes firing into it.

IMO - you do not weld up the pipes and bends prior to forming the collector. I make the collector priority #1 when making a manifold. Cut the collector pipes out of straight steam pipe at the angle you desire/or is practical for your collector, number them, and then make each one fit into it's own quadrant of the turbo flange. It is a lot of work (which is why I do it first).

Alternatively - use a concentric reducer (available from the same place where you get bends) cut it down to desired size and weld pipes in - I do not recommend this method of manuacture.

Coating on the outside with HPC will only trap heat into it, making it hotter, wont help the metal. But personally i think 10mm mild steel is heaps big enough, make sure you get the flange faced when you are finished!

Coating the manifold should prevent the material from fretting on every cool down cycle - note 304 stainless will fret as well. 316 will not.
Fretting = the surface oxidising and coming off in a very fine layer. It does this time and again until there is no metal left.
Manifold should be coated internally and externally - ceramic is best.
