timing light help

Hi, i borrowed a timing light off a friend, and instead of having the two power clamps and the special connection to stick on the spark plug lead, it's got two other wires that just have a hollow circular metal piece sticking out the end, they are both similar but slightly different. How do i hook this up to my spark lead so i can read my timing? Thanks for the help guys
you take the lead off the plug, place one end of the connection on to the spark plug and plug the lead back on the other side - if I understood this correctly when I read it (they all used to be this way).
