Good drag tyres?

Well, it seems my new best friend the 1JZ has a bit of an appetite for tyres, with no help at all coming from my right foot.
So I've decided maybe I should dig out 2 of my old 15x6.5" mag wheels & get some tallish & wide tyres on them and then only use them for drag racing, so the no.1 priority is dry weather straight line grip, with noise & wear rates not a concern. At the same time, I want something street legal that we can drive on the road if necessary.
Going by my above priorities, it sounds like a semi slick is the answer, can anyone suggest a good one, or are there any really grippy street tyres available?
The preffered size would be 235/60 15 I guess.
Anyone had any good or bad experience?

Big Perm,
Dunno how serious you wanna get, but I'd try and get hold of some Mickey Thompson ET Street's. They're DOT approved, but not speed rated. Not sure about sizes for those rims tho.
Whack 'em on and watch your ET's drop man.

That's the thing I forgot to mention: Price.
I guess I wouldn't want to spend anything over $200 each, which really means $250 if they're really gonna be worth it. But any more than that & I think I might be better off with a wider wheel maybe, seeing as it'll fit. I'm only using these wheels because they're lying around doing nothing here.
Any vauge stab at a nearly approx geusstimate of a price on that them there MTs?

hi mate,
you may want to go wider on the rims...
most street slicks have stiff side walls... no big bags like full drag slicks... so you will only fit a quite narrow tyre on those rims....
if your gunna spend the cash on the tyres, better off to grab some bigger rims to make the most of them in my opinion.
Cheers

Yeah, maybe it's a bit of a cornball idea, the sorta money I want to spend is the sorta money we should be spending on normal tyres for the cressida, so I think I'll just put in for 4 new good tyres for normal use & get the 2 best old ones put on the mags for drag duties. We'll just have to ease up on the really smokey burnouts.
BTW, the old tyres are Pirelli P5000s, & they seem pretty good to me, considering the power they're putting down.

I recently priced a set of 225/50/15 Mickey Thompson ET street tyres for my Cressy and they were about $300 a tyre with a 10 week wait while they ship em in...
There was some guy that imported a container load of Nitto extreme tyres that all the japs use with great success. Prob would'nt have many left by now though.

$300 per tyre sounds pretty good.... Joel, If you were willing to pay up to $250 per tyre, an extra $50 each would be worth spending.
I think that container load of Nitto's got snapped up pretty quick from what i could gather, but I'm sure someone will start bringing them in regularly soon.

Yeah that is a pretty good price...... but I'm only willing to spend 200, which could just stretch to 250 at the MOST! I just can't do it captain.

Toyo Proxes RA-1. Unreal street legal treaded race tyre. Soft compound (probably wont get more than 10,000km around town) but that's the price you pay for grip..
Last I checked, they were beween $200-$240 each retail, depending on size. Not all Toyo dealers sell them, only a select few. Check out the Toyo website for more info.

I think you'll struggle to find any tyre in the size you want that will provide adequate grip? Stew/Toy 77 has made an important comment in regards to sidewall construction, as this will have a dramatic effect on the tyres ability to grip in high torque/low speed applications.
The Toyo Proxes RA-1's mentioned above are a step in the right direction, however again, I think you'll have a problem with sizing. You may want to reconsider you're rim selection as a 6.5" rim isn't wide enought to give the footprint you'll want with these R Comp style tyres.
Having said all that, I'll also let you know I have a pair of R-comps in the shed for sale. Yokahama Advan 0032R tyres in 245/45/16 sizing for $100/pr, if you can bring yourself to source 16" rims?!!!

Joel,
You can get Mc Creary in a dirt (must be dirt compoud for outright grip) compound that will do the job very well. They are not considered as highly as the MT's but are basically the same construction -IE they are intended for drag work, soft side wall. Cost is well in the region of your budget.
The shop is called Mc Noughton tyres - I have posted their details before.
Call me if you want further info on their suitability.

Thanks for the info guys, I'm learning.
Jason, I was meaning to ring you first thing, & I thought I'd just chuck this thread up before I sat down & called you, but then I lost track & it got pretty late etc etc.
I've come to the conclusion though that as usual, if I'm gonna do it, I may as well do it right the first time. I think I'll wait until my car's ready to go before I splash out on some dedicated drag tyres, the cressida's old pirellis on my old mags should do the job for the cressida until then. It's not as if my brother lets me drag it that often anyway.
And when I do decide to take the plunge, I'll have a look into the ideal wheel & tyre size, & by that time, there's a slight chance I may have changed to 5 stud anyway.
Clint, those tyres would be a perfect fit on my celica, and the cressida does have a brake upgrade planned that will require 16s. I'll definitely have a good think about it. Thanks mate.
