Hi
I Have recently put in an 18rg into my celica and only now i am running into problems with my electric distributor.
when under load the car will miss and the tacho will go crazy (fly up to 8000 and then back to normal) i suspect that this may be the coil as it sometimes happens when i go over big bumps under load. it is a standard toyota coil.
any other ideas? i havent really looked at anything yet as i dont have the time.
thanks in advance
Daniel

Your problem may be because you are using apoints coil with an electronic ignition? this is a no no use one that is made for an electonic ignition such as early magna

This is VERY correct. If you are going for an aftermarket (Bosch perhaps) coil - the ones for electronic are distinguishable by being black (rather than red).

Hi
thanks for the replys guys more problems have devoloped too! the car is rough it seems until the main jets come on? then its normal unless it decides to go spastic and miss. the car also has a tenanicy to backfire out the carbs. perhaps a loose venturi?
as far as i know the coil is one without a resister it was the one strapped to the igniter assembly so i presumed it would be correct (but one thing i have learnt is to NEVER asume ANYTHING!) I will test the coil and check the plugs to see if one or more is fouling and a compresion test.
how would i test the coil to see if it has a resister?
thanks in advance daniel.
PS i may take u up on that phil and change the valve seals while im doing the headgasket and check the shims wheee!

Lack of fuel perhaps - erratic igniton timing can also play havoc - fix the coil/distributor first - then assess the backfire afterwards.

are u runnin twin delortos
they are not the best carbies
they r hard to get parts for
whatever carbies u have pul them apart and clean and put a kit thru them
then make sure all the butterflies are closed
i know with webers sometimes the butterfly shaft bends slightly so one butterfly is a tiny bit open compared to toher one shut
if a cyl backfires thru the carby its usually a mixture prob in that cyl
bent butterflies
mis adjusted idle screws
wrong idle or main jets could be the prob
best to get carbies fixed and tuned professionally if u can

The car has been running for arround 3000km fine until now. Therefore i suspect an idle jet to be clogged or there is an inlet manifold leak or loss of compression in a cylinder which may upset the carbs.
I will test the coil, compresson and igniter tomorrow but does anyone know any good ways to check idle jets in these carbs? i cant exactly stick my head between the strut tower to look inside.
