upgrading brake booster for ae86 Thu, 20 May 2004 16:28 Go to next message
hey guys, i did a quick search using "upgrading brake booster" but it didnt come up with anything so...
what would you use if you wanted to upgrade the brake booster AFTER you did a front brake swap ?? eg FC3S swap.
i went to a brake shop and they quoted me 180 bucks to bore out(?) the existing brake booster/msater cylinder (cant remember what he said and im not good with techincal side of brakes).
would it be easier just to swap one from a different car? someone told me once that a RAV4 is good to use?

ok, the brake shop guy said that (i think) the master cylinder can be bored out to accomodate my needs. is this a good idea? i never told him what kind of swap i was doing.
ive swapped on the FC3S brakes/calipers on my ae86, should i bore out or swap the master cylinder? or should i swap the booster aswell?

So it the master , theres lots of chooses for this with that upgrade i would do a search and pm people who have this conversion , the last car i drove with this conversion had the stock master and the pedal was almost on the floor , so they must need more fluid displacement for the bigger pistons in the caliper .

this should be in the tech section but anyway...
theres no need to upgrade the booster unless it is stuffed, your wanting an upgraded master cylinder. you can bore it out but this is not ideal as it makes the material thinner making it more prone to 'balooning' this is unlikely but not worth the risk when there is a simple solution.
a STARION master cylinder is what i use, its the easiest option. the recess to the piston is the same as the sprinters so the master cylinder itself bolts straight on. there are two pipes that connect to it. the rear pipe matches up almost perfectly while the front one will have to be fabricated. this i did myself with some copper brake line and a flaring kit which you wont have, so a brake shop will make you up a new front pipe probably for around $15. this modification will make your pedal much firmer and more responsive. it doesnt matter what year, they are all the same. your prob looking at anywhere between $100 - $180. i think last time i got one was around $150 from the mitsubishi wreckers in greenacre.
