TA22 diff and axles Fri, 21 May 2004 03:33 Go to next message
i have done a search and come up with very little, but i'm sure someone knows the answers.

I have a T292 diff in my TA22. than means 4.1:1 right? also what size are the axles and how many splines are on the axles. are the centres the same as the later T18 diff centres?

thanks

Yep, T292 is 4.1 open centre. Axles are 23 spline units, and are 23.5mm thick at their smallest point near the splines. Centre is identical with T18 diff also.

while i'm here, another thing

is there any truth in the rumour that RA28 celicas diffs are the same but have larger diameter axles, but the same splines? if so would it be a good upgrade to sue RA28 axles in the TA22 diff?

If you plan on putting the LSD into a drum brake diff, you'll need to check the length of the axles first, the disc brake axles that the LSD centre is designed to fit, are slightly smaller than the drum brake axles. To make an AE86 style LSD fit into a drum brake diff, you need to take 5-7mm off the axle length so it clears the new LSD housing you install.

where would I find this id code on the diff?
I just got another diff for my ta23, but it's out of a ra23, the centres look way different though, one centre is longer out from the housing where the tailshaft bolts onto it, and it also has a bit of a lump ontop of it just to the right hand side... where as the other one is shorter from the housing out...
and how do I pick the traces of a lsd diff ?

I turn the tailshaft bit and the ends both go the same way, turn one of the ends and the other end goes the same way too??

anyway am doing a search too but yeah...

the code ain't on the diff

the code is on the plate inside the engine bay - this identifies the diff and the ratio

if its an early shit ta22 diff like mine it may have a D stamped on it - these are weak.

to check for LSD - take it apart and have a looksee....

yeah i thought that it was only on the id plate on the car, but trouble with a 30 year old car is "who's been there before"??
that's ok, just thought someone may have noticed the differences in the centres and known...

the borg warners have a little tag on them which tells you about the diff but, unfortunately the celica doesn't.

and yes i know what you mean. have found many things like that in my celica...
