Best Oil Filter & Oil? Fri, 21 May 2004 05:31 Go to next message
What oil filter is best to use?

I can use both types, however I think the Z89A is the smaller one and might be the only one that fits.

Z9:
Valvoline,$4-5
Ryco, $7-9
or Toyota? $15-20

Z89A:
Ryco, $18-$20
Toyota, ?
Valvoline, ?

Those are cheapest to most expensive.

I use a Z89A now with my oil relocation kit and cooler. Engine is a 1JZ-GTE.

What is a drainback valve on the Ryco Z9 oil filter?

Also, has anyone used Pennzoil? They have a 10W50 Full Synthetic oil that is available in autoshops near me. I couldn't find the Penrite 10W50 fully synthetic oil. I also need about 6 Litres since my oil relocation and cooler kit takes more. Mobile 1 5W50 is too thin for my engine.

The drain-back valve ensures that the filter stays full of oil..so when the motor has been stopped for a while the pump doesn't have to fill it up again..A very good idea in my books due to the fact that most oil filters arn't installed exactly vertical and there can be a bit of a air pocket if the oil has drained back.
Oil choice has been discussed here on several occasions and the "general concensus" is what-ever you prefer, but change it on a regular basis..and do the occasional acid test when you drop it...(looking for any nasties that you may have picked up with-in your fuel)
Cheers

How do you do an acid test?

And what part number is the Ryco Z89A for Toyota Genuine filter?

Thanks. I might try Pennzoil 10W50 Fully Synthetic If I can't find the same Penrite.

How do you do an acid test?...Litmus paper strips is a good start. If the reading is high it means that the oil should be changed more regularly. What is on the dip stick is enough to get a reading.."Most" Diesel repair shops have them in stock (litmus strips)and they can be used for oil or coolant, both which are (to me)very important to keeping an eye on what can't be seen in either systems.Oil, like water can become very acidic with all the dis-similar metals in engines (steel pump gears, alloy blocks and heads, copper gaskets, stainless relief valve springs in filters..etc..etc..)Prevention is better (easier)then cure..
Cheers

Factory Toyota filters are the best I've seen. As a teenager I worked part time in a garage. I would take used filters and open them up to see what and how the filtering system worked. By far was Toyota the best. The filtering material is honeycombed in the filter, not fanned out. Beautiful system.

As for oil, Mobil1. Toyota now stocks Mobil1 at it's dealers here in Canada.

I couldnt get the factory Toyota Oil Filter, they said it superceded and the new ones were too small.

So I went with a Ryco Z89A and Motul Turbolight 4100, 10W40 oil.

I thought i'd need two bottles since I have an oil cooler and remote filter kit. I ended up taking 5L out and only putting 4 litres in. Very odd, I also ran it for a while and checked the levels constantly.

Is there any easy way to make sure all the oil comes out of the cooler?

I looked for Penrite HPR15, but it's only semi-synthetic.
