Do I need a catalytic convertor

I have been to 2 exhaust shops to have my exhaust modified. Currently, I dont have a cat, however one of the shops said I dont need one, and the other said I did. I have a Gen2 3SGTE in a TA22. So what do I do, run a cat or none. My engineer is pretty easy going and I havent asked him as yet, which I will do tomoorow, but I thought one or some of you fellas could give me an answer today. I am located in Sydney NSW. Not too sure if other states have different rules & regs.
Thanx for the help.

Your car will most likely have to do an emmissions test, and it will fail without one.

If you ever got pulled over , and they found you had no cat , they would bend you over and make you oink.

your engineer will require you to have an emissions test (unless your 3s has *ALL* the original emissions gear on it, including intake, intercooler, and exhaust (including cat).
So you will need a cat to pass that emissions.
And yes, you can get a BIG fine for driving around with no cat in a car which requires one (which yours does)

You can have the neighbours but I don't know how stable it would be at full temp. Come to think of it I don't know how impressed it would be at being welded under your car.

this engine originally came in a car WITH a catalytic converter
YES you WILL need a catalytic converter on your car
a STOCK TA22 without a new engine wouldn't need one, but since your engineering a NEW engine into an OLD car, then your going to need one

If you want to enginner the car YES, if dont want to engineer the car who cares, but you will run the risk of getting a fine if u are caught without a cat.

The other thing is that often the cat has to BE there, but doesn't necessarily have to WORK...
Written by the same people who say we still need unleaded filler necks/stickers on our cars in a country that finally banned leaded petrol...

yes normally fines can be several thousands of dollars.
(unless you run LPG like me and shinny and don't need a cat)

I would just like to chip in with a tree-hugger/health perspective. "Get a catalytic converter if you are running unleaded"
Unleaded petrol contains a fair few nasties, and as car modifiers we get a bad enough image in the community for noise pollution, recklessness etc etc, the last thing we need to do is confirm our image in the community by having cars with excessively bad emissions...especially considering your choice of engine. As much as it will cost you performance, it *is* a street car and as much as some wanker without a cat will beat you on a dyno it's not about the hp figure in the end anyway.
