RANT:- Lazy panel beaters/painters!!!!!

Before i start, THIS IS IN NO WAY AIMED AT THE PEOPLE ON THESE FORUMS WHO ARE IN THIS PROFESSION!!!
Now that i have that out of the way, my car has been in bits now for about 3 months. Once it was back to a bare shell, i was told by the guy "supposedly" doin the paint work on the car, "its better off if u paint strip it back to bare metal". Fair enough says i, so my brother and i spend god knows how many hours doing just that. After spending $1400 the week before on rust repairs, i was glad to find NO more rust in the shell . As with all old cars, there is always car park dents, and deviations in the roof, but in general straight order. So we prime it up (prevent it from rusting) and i tow it to the "panelbeaters".
After a short chat with the owner, "Now, i will start it next week. I just have a Torana to finish off, but i will definately get it started Monday", talking about it the wednesday before that. "yep, no worries. So how long will you have it for??" ask i....."No more than 2-3 weeks, will have it done by the end of August, no worries" says he......"Thats what i was aiming for" says i "Need it driveable by November"......."yeah, you will definately have it back by the end of August"......
BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!
Visited him this arvo to work out a price, the car is still sitting in the same spot, untouched, where i rolled it off the trailer!!! Turns out he would rather not spend the time fixing all the little dents and tidying up around the body!!! So now i have to find someone to do a "cash" job for the panel work ( MAY have that sorted, unsure yet though), on his premises, so that when that part of the job is finished, he can take it upstairs to paint it.
Its got me stumped how these people are in business. 3.5 weeks and it hasnt been touched, whereas if another shop had it, MAYBE it would be finished. Who knows!!
I have nothing against paying for quality work, but i have EVERYTHING against people who blatantly tell you crap and cause you greif, over something thats in their best interest to complete and do a quality job on!! NO RECOMENDATIONS COMING FROM ME ABOUT THIS OFFENDING SHOP!!!!
Basically, as everyone usually does, im working to a budget and a time limit. I only pay for work that i have to pay for (ie, do almost everything myself), and because of this, both budget/time limit has been shot to pieces.....
Cant believe it...... :-

Be careful Phil, if it has been in primer for that long there could be rust forming again under the surface.
Primer is porous and should not be left with out paint for so long, water can go straight through it and act on the metal below.

these guys make money from insurance work ONLY!
they generally have NO TIME for cash jobs. To get decent work done you usually have to find a bloke who WANTS to look after your car, ie: would want to own your car and is an enthusiast.
Performance shops and the like seem to be the best for this sort of treatment, since they dont get such "insurance work". Better yet get a compressor and buy the paint and do it yourself. Then just get it baked and clear coated.....

More to the point, panelshops make very little money out of insurance work , however insurance work accounts for 99.9 % of the income.
Insurance companies such as the NRMA dictate prices and turnaround times to panelshops, by means of a star rating approval system, such that they cannot afford to do any other work. If they do not keep the insurers happy the work is sent elsewhere and the shop is left high and dry with no work at all !!
non insurance jobs have to take a back seat, the NRMA considers if a job takes 5 hours ( by thier reckoning not the repairers) then they expect to pick the car up finished 5 hours after it was dropped off, whether the shop is busy or not.
They work out how many working days the job will take according to the number of hours work and after that time the job is late and the shops rating is affected.
Insurance companies are destroying the smash repair industry and taking all the automotive refinishers with them !!

The joys of dealing with a panel shop. My car took 3 years in 3 different panel shops before I got the job I wanted.

Its hard finding a good panel beater that'll do what u want and spend time on ur car.
I happened to find a really good one near my area and even though it was a pissy job, it took him 4 hours to do and he charged me a slab of beer.
Other places didnt even want to know unless there was something in it for them.

Talking to a guy in the bizz that ownes his own shop and his biggest consern on doing cash jobs is not getting payed (I'm not saying you would do this) but many have in the past.he will not hand over the car until he gets payed but he has to pay for everything used and the labour aswell. Now this is were problems start, they want cash up front you and I don't want to part with it because of what we hear time and time again so you end up with the problem that you have now. There are two sides to everything and I hope that this clears a few things up. BTW NRMA and the rest hold out on paying for up to 90 days and this puts a big strain on cash flow. Find a good panel shop and see how you go

Never looked at it that way about cash jobs...but I guess they can just say that u dont get ur car back until u pay.
Also, I've noticed that it is true that panel beaters dont repair lots of things. I saw this panel shop who was performing a cut n shut on a VT. Went back there a couple days later (Mechanics are next door) and it was done, looked perfect. Would prolly be cheaper for them to replace the whole back half of the car instead of repairing it.
I also went into this paint store and this panel beater guy was asking for some paint to be matched up coz he did a cut n shut and his paint was a lil too white.
