Sprinter handbrake cable- need help on tightening!! Sun, 23 May 2004 09:03 Go to next message
hey all. my handbrake is nearly bloody vertical when i pull it on, if i leave it any lower the car starts to friggen roll lmao. Laughing

i crawled under the car yesterday and had a quick look and couldnt find a bolt or something similar on the cable coming out of the floor or anywhere along whwre it runs to the rear of the car. my dad had a look too and he was just as stumped as me as there is nothing there that you can tighten so the handbrake lever doesnt have to be pulled so tight.

im guessing someone has tightened there cables before, can anyone enlighten me as too where, or how to tighten it. there was a silver cover where it came down thru the floor, but that seemed to be permanently connected to the floor, so yeh i have no idea.

any tips or help would be great. cheers all!! Very Happy

Otherwise adjust the drum brakes at the rear, presuming the self adjuster has long since packed up and gone bush. Perhaps a new set of shoes wouldn't half hurt either!

DONT ADJUST FROM CABLE

that only stretches the cable and makes your problem worse

take off the wheels

take off the drums

there is an adjuster just below the wheel cylinder at the top
wind it out until the drum just goes back on then back it off 3-4 clicks

put wheels back on and its all over

if u want i could come round n help only takes bout 10 minutes

I agree, i tightened the cable once then installed new shoes at the rear, instead of 3-4 cliks on the lever it was 1 click and i couldnt pull it any more, not good.

i've never seen the sprinter b4 but generally this is what u do

loosen cable either somewhere under handbrake lever or along the line under car

adjust handbrake at the shoe/drum til its spins smooth but grabby

than tighten up the cable again til u get bout 5-7 click on the handbrake lever

tightening ur cable is not gonna work if its not holding in the first place and too tight u mite end up snapping it

ahhhh thanks lads, that solves it, id only ever tightened handbrakes on Commodores before, and the bold is actually under the car, thats why i didnt even think it would be under the console for the Sprinter lol.

tightening at the drums makes more sense though. cheers, daniel. Smile
