AE86: springs n shocks setup Sun, 23 May 2004 13:22 Go to next message
I did a search but got a very broad result Laughing

i rang up a suspension shop recently and asked how much for lowered springs... they quoted me around $300-400... now when i went to ask some friends of this information i was told that i'd be stupid not to get shocks in the process...

i'm not lookingi for major handling improvement (at this point but will be later on) im just looking to lower my car and get some looks with the possibility of adding on later...

can anyone give me the bottom line and a straight answer with this?

i really didn't plan on spending a grand on shocks and srpings... all i want is a lowered sprinter that won't make any difference in handling or performance...

cheers

suspension should be done properly, no short cuts ( no cut springs! ) if u cant affort to do it proper leave it stock...........just fit some king coils for about $250 for 4 easy dont go lower than 2 inches down on stock shocks, low doesnt always mean good

so u suggest getting coils? not bothering with springs?

i wasn't planning on cut springs anyway... i was looking at proper lowered springs from suspension city (in melbourne)

i dun want too low... just a few inchs off... about 2 or 3...

king coils can do this?

mate a coil is a spring, a coil spring, so lowered springs and lowered coils are the same thing lol Laughing

Well it depends on how much lower you go. Excessive lowering on the standard travel shocks does not ride well at all, and your shocks will wear out quicker.

would i notice a difference in handling? good or bad...

When uprating springs, it is a good idea to change the shocks accordingly.

If you are using roughly the same spring rate however there is no reason to use a different shock, bar the fact that it may bottom out which is not good for handling.

If you want stiffer springs then the shock should be uprated accordingly.

Yes you will.

It will stiffen up you suspension, making it handle better,
more flat ie: less body roll = quicker cornering. Cool

But remember it will feel ruffer, you'll find yourself trying to avoid every little bump in the road.

If I were you I would get a set of lowered coil/springs
from K-mac, for now, and then when you can afford it
you upgrade from there; sports shocks, new bushes,
front and back sway bars, etc.

I had a full K-mac suspension on my first ae86 and I loved it.

I think the best upgrade on a Aus spec ae86 is the suspension.

what they said, if u just wanna go to inches down, and dont care a whole lot, just buy springs, get em in there and then think about shocks. pm me for suspension parts for ae86, i got a fair few

basically all springs likeTRD, Cusco, Tien and etc from japan is good..
other than that...whatever name u mention here...prepared to get verbally stoned by ppl..

sometimes ppl want stuff which is good enough depending on what they can afford..not necessarily THE BEST springs in the market..am i right? Rolling Eyes

buy something which is good enough according to your wallet's thickness...if u dont have many digits in your bank account...start planting weed on your backyard..
Very Happy

king springs are a very respected company, are used by many car manufacturers, such as in fords djr 320, and they custom make springs too, so i dont know what u have against them, for why's application they will be fine

king make formula springs and k-mac prolly come out of the same factory, a spring is pretty much a spring unless u are really rich or go without eating to mod your car

So -why- go by some springs k-mac or kings, they will be fine

i drove an ae86 (not mine) with standard shocks and king springs. felt no difference, squishey as hell and just looked lower

he then dumped those and got some espilier ones, needless to say the feeling was much much better.
