Reliability of a TA23? (after 2K km...) Sun, 23 May 2004 16:37 Go to next message
Hi everyone! I'm about to begin my first car restoration. It'll
probably be a Toyota Celica TA23 (european model with 2 horizontal
carbs). I'm actually getting it very cheap but it has 200 000km on it so i was wondering if i'm gonna have to change a lot of parts (except a few bodywork and basic engine work of course). I can't find a lot of celica parts where i live so if i have to find all the direction or transmission or anything that's haven't been replaced and is very used after that mileage, it'll be a problem I think.
So, is this car reliable even after all these years and km? Does the engine need some serous work (piston, rings, rods...)? It is a 2T-B 1600
Thanks for your answers!

Marc

if your in australia i wouldnt worry about the engine im sure u could pick up 10 or so of these engines for less than $300, most people chuck them out in favour of something better

Thanks for your answers! Actually, i'm not in australia but in france and here, celica's are not really common so the only solution i got is to order new parts from the toyota dealer (he told me they still do it... is that true?).
To answer a few questions : the speedo only goes up to 99 999km like yours... but i know it already did a hundred so... and i do believe the carbs are horizontals (they are "directly" mounted to the cylinder head without an elbow... am i right?)
I'm waiting for others replies Razz everybody tell me his celica story!
Thanks

Marc

It sounds as though your carburettors have been replaced with sidedraft carburettors (maybe Solex PPH, Weber DCOE, Dellorto DHLA...?). This would be considered an upgrade.

While the build data plate in the car may specify 2T-B motor, if sidedraft carburettors are fitted the motor may in fact be 2T-G, which installs in the same mounts and transmission as 2T-B. Is the motor head cover domed over or more square?

In Australia parts are no longer available for this car through Toyota.
