yeh i got the same thing, exept i got the spark when i was tightening the alternator (which for some reason started to come loose...) and yeah what could have been damaged by shorting the alternator out???

check to see if youve blown the fuseable link.

if you do what i did and short the alternator out you often burn or melt the coper windings in there which result's in it slowly draining the battery over time (depending on how much damage the alternator is) for me it was an overnight thing, and car ran fine when driving still pumped out 14volts but not enough current so when it hit night and you put your headlights on well they start to get dimmer and dimmer then eventually engine and everything shuts down.
but to answer your question by shorting the alternator out you often damage the alternator, or othertimes its the regulator.
but all can be prevented to an extent if you have a fussable link so if you don't have one get one.

The fuseable link is those 2 main wires running off the positive batery teminal, and are used to power the whole car. They will melt and open circuit if too much current is allowed to flow, (if you have a short).
OK, this is what you may have done:
The positive battery wire going to the starter may have been touching your exhuast, and shorted onto the body when you used the spanner. Just a guess.

If the positive terminal of the starter was shorting to the exhaust it would already be grounded through the engine!

I wrote out a whole step by step guide how to find out what's wrong with your alternator, and my computer stuffed up. so here it is basically.
Probably a stretched belt. if the tensioners are at their furthest then it's most likely. If the alternator is rattling around, then the pivot belt is most likely worn, pull it out and check it...
have fun!!!

my alternator would always come loose then i found the bolt which holds the alternator bracket onto the engine was a bit loose, did it up tight and haven't had a problem since.
