I bought a CD.......

Yes, I bought a CD and unfortunately it is one of these fucked up ones that won't let you play it at full quality on your computer (despite it being MY CD and MY computer, both of which I bought with MY hard earned money) .
Is there some way to override this most fucked up of situations?
Computer nerds, I'm staring straight at you.....

My first plan of attack would be to try the CD under Linux...
I can test that theory for you if you wanted... Just send me the CD...

Which CD is it, and what happens when you put it in the computer? I've been playing around with my Home Theatre PC and never come across this problem (which a few people I know have), so obviously I'm doing something right, and it's a lot easier than ripping then playing!

I bought the new Lenny Kravitz Baptism CD. POS WMP wouldn't play it (although it plays almost all my other CDs), and instead some POS player popped up that played the CD at 48K quality.
Argh my ears!! The goggles do nothing!
CDEX is teH winnaH!
Thank you very much.

I get ya now, they open their stupid proprietry player. 48k quality is DVD, it's most likely resampling to 48k from 44k (normal CD) as most cheap sound cards do it anyway.
My recommendation above and beyond anything else would be foobar. http://foobar2000.org/ Top player, millions of settings and features, and no ripping required. Just close the dodgy program they supply and open foobar and click open audio cd.

So how do I rip my 'Copy Controlled CD' Australian ones?
CDEX won't rip them, and Nero won't burn them.
Its killing me, I don't take originals out in my car, incase shit gets stolen

That sucks Cruz. From what I know (and I could be wrong) you are legally entitled to make a copy of any software you own for backup use. I think the same rule applies to CDs (not 100% sure).
If I had a CD player (Yeah yeah, it sux) there is no way I would keep actual CDs in my car.

Coz then you get shit quality
And Shraka, as far as I know it is 100% illegal to make any backups of any cd's, even for you're own personal use.
When you purchase a cd, you purchase the right to play THAT cd in a private manner, nothing more.

Hmmm, maybe I just need a newer version.
I open the cd up in CDEX, and the first 2 track are alright, but then it says the rest are like 800,000meg each.
Go figure.

Hey Ed,
Yup, got your CD. I still haven't got off my arse to buy some blank CDs!
Got them ripped though. Hope you can play Ogg Vorbis files.
Sorry about the delay. I'll run out to the shops today and get some CDs. I've just been a tight arse and didn't want to pay the "Canberra tax" when buying CDs... They sell them down here for almost double what I can get them for in Sydney.

Some of the Copy Protected Australian ones won't read in a cd burner. (ie linkin park meteroa)
My computer at work only has a burner, which I use to (legally) play my own cd's while working.
The cd in question displays the CD-DA logo as does my CD burner, but yet it cannot play that CD. That is just seriously fucked up. Anyway answer was to walk over to a workstation without a burner (ie a normal cd-rom) and rip the fucker to mp3.
Copywrite law is pretty vague on the personal backup items. Apparently it is legal to make a backup if there is no way possible that both may be play simultaneously, definining now way possible is pretty vague!

Oh, and my CD had some errors.
As for copy protection, I've mentioned it twice already...
I've had trouble copying some CDs under Windoze.
Under Linux, it works fine.

Yeah, the Orb stuff was the stuff I wanted, so I was happy.
Might have to pad the last CD out a bit though.
I could put Initial D Stage 4 on it?
Or maybe Top Gear vid?
Or any other music you're after?

I just thought I'd add, I grabbed CruUZsida's "copy-controlled" Cat Empire CD and used Nero to copy it. Nero burnt me an exact copy of the audio tracks but just burnt a normal audio CD that didn't have any of the copy protection on it

go to http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ and download itunes. it'll rip anything, plus it rips to .m4a files (basically mp4) which are about half the size for the same qual. itunes can be used as a burning program for audio cd's as well so no probs with the new file format. its also just a good program in general.
and before i get bashed - i dont have a mac, i swear
