3S blocks - common oil pan gasket?? Wed, 26 May 2004 07:32 Go to next message
Hey Guys,

I need to get a new oil pan gasket for the 3SGE in my ST162 Celica.

Went to Autobarn and their catalogue doesn't list one for the 3SGE (meaning unavailable), however there was one available for the 3SFE.

Since these are common blocks it would make sense to me that the oil pan gasket would be common to both, but does anyone know for sure?? Just thought I'd see if anyone knows before I go and buy what may turn out to be a useless piece of cork.

If I can't buy one I guess I'll have to go the silicone route.....I've never done that before so if anyone could tell me what silicone to use and the basics of how to go about it I'd appreciate it.

Cheers,
Matt

You will probably find that they were never fitted with a gasket from the factory (Toyota love to glue them on).

There is a difference between gen 3 and the earlier gens (I believe, correct me if I am wrong).

the oil sump goop costs around $20 from Toyota, and is good for a few uses.

Yeah dude, the 3sfe gasket is the same. I only just put it on mine. Its actually a lot wider than needed but it works. I also used gasket goo to hold it there. I got mine from autobarn too

Yeah, checked my Chilton's manual last night and it makes no mention of a gasket, instead it tells you to apply RTV gasket material. So it was probably done that way from the factory.

I guess the cork gasket for the 3SFE is there in case people have a preference for those.

So what's better? Or is it more down to personal preference?

The S1 3SGE does not have a gasket. Use the RTV silicone or equivalent.

I just thought I'd add in having just recently done this three times...there is no gasket for the 3S-GE, RTV is the go...by the way...if you want to get to the sump and take it off (if you haven't already done so) then you will have trouble with the engine cross member and the suspension cross member (get a breaker bar, you will undoubtedly need it!)
