Hello all, i am trying to gather as much information to perform and engine swap into my ST162 (Gen 2 3sgte).
I have it mostly planned out what i am going to be doing.
However i have not settled on a gearbox for the job yet. I am aware of all the options out there (i have read many many engine swap posts here, and elsewhere).
I am told that i cant use my S-53 Transmission (originally from a 3sge model ST162R) for the starter motor will get in the way of turbo piping.
I am now considering getting an MR2 rearcut for the job (originally ST185 Front cut was to be purchased)
What if any are the extra hassles with this proposal over the GT4 FC? Are the engine mounts the same? does everything else fit nicely in the engine bay as a 3S from a GT4? What kind of intercooler differences if any are there? Exhaust Manifold differences? - Email me if you have experience with such a swap please, i must know EVERYTHING i can else i will be burning up $$ by not planning correctly.
Finally can someone pls send me an email / url to a DETAILED information on the gearbox conversion of a MR2 Turbo to FWD setup for a 3SGTE, i heard many ppl say it can be done, and in fact many ppl have done it - i just need to know exactly how, so i can (if i go this route) print out the steps and hand them to my gearbox mechanic and have it whip up the changes.
All help greatly appreciated. thanks very much to those Whom have advised me thus far.
**** Lastly, i will likely be starting the swap in 4-6weeks, Perth Northern Suburbs. If someone experienced with such swaps and the pitfalls, would like to assist me (Much beer will be provided) that would be awesome, email me.
cheers,
Adam

the selector mechanism is different and wont swap easily. also, the MR2 turbo has a separate 1/2 axle on 1 side and the mounts for this are diferrent on celica. the turbo gearbox cases start life as the same castings, but are differently machined. the non turbo tranny wont handle the turbo engine for long--it is just a boggo camry type tranny
get a turbo celica tranny , and dont waste your time

I will have a turbo celica tranny with the front cut, but is it not expensive to convert it to two wheel drive? if it can be done cheaply then i will go that route, but if it cant i need to look into other things.
i have a 4grand ceiling for the swap and so far things are looking good - ($500 spare for fucking around with mods on components) - thats clear of all additional items required (fuel pumps, etc)
Can the GT4 tranny be modded easily and does anyone know anyone in Perth that knows how to do it? and for a reasonable price. Otherwise i will need to go the MR2 tranny as i will be short of turbo tranny options.
I did see a post on here for above modification to GT4 box but i cannot find it, i would love to talk to whomever carried out the mod and gather some information to compare difficulty with the MR2 tranny conversion.
End of the day i just want a strong box and unecessary horsepower

I'm getting a 3sgte from a st205 celica half cut in my sv21 camry, hopefully starting this week.
I looked at a mr2 turbo tranny too. But of course the shift lever things are on the wrong side of the box.
I have a widebody camry V6 box sitting on the floor at the mechanics, next to a 4 cyl camry box which is probably the same as the 4 cyl box in old celicas. The V6 box has the identical bolt pattern to the 4 cyl camry box.
It looks heaps more solid than the 4 cyl box.
My brother has a V6 camry sportivo manual and its transmission code is E153 which I am pretty sure is the same code as the MR2 turbo, so it should be strong enough.
The V6 makes something like 280Nm of torque and a 3sgte makes something like 305Nm so It should hold up OK anyhow.
The driveshafts for the V6 box have splines that are ALLOT bigger than the 4 cyl ones in the camry/probably celica, so will need some sort of custom shafts.
My mechanic has a widebody camry with a ST185 motor already in it. He ran the stock 4 cyl box for a few months, apparently it copped a flogging but never broke.
He got his GT4 box converted to 2WD, but they stuffed it up and it still sends torque to the (not connected) back wheels, drives like an auto with no oil, sounds bloody funny when you here it comming down the road. He didn't pay them, so can't tell you what it would cost.
The V6 box is much lighter than the GT4 box and looks like a much better option. I paid $330 for mine from Newcastle Auto dismantlers (in NSW), looks like it is in good condition and he recons he can get more for that price.
Some websites recon late model camrys have LSD's but my brothers sportivo doesn't appear to be a LSD. I'm not worried at this stage though.
Mr2 halfcuts have a few differences to GT4's. I think they are mostly brackets for alternators, ps pumps etc also the GT4s make a bit more power another 10KW or so, different turbo I think steel vrs ceramic mabye?
My mechanics recons GT4's are easier so I went will that.
Can get pics of gearboxs etc if you like, have a search on the web I have seen a few sites with info on 3sgte into celica swaps
also I should know more about clutch/driveshaft options later this week

The later Camry V6 gearboxes are actually better than the MR2 version, stronger gears, etc, but NO LSD though.
I'm looking at installing a Camry 1MZ-FE V6 into my car. The matching gearbox would be good.
And considering an MR2 box goes for over a grand, it might be an option to get an LSD later.
I've driven a manual 3.5L Magna VRX & they light up one wheel very easily.
CamryGT?, can you pm me your contact's details, as I'm trying to source a whole half cut that I could use.
