TA22 1g GTE brakes?

Help,
I am new to celicas and I have just bought a tatty ta22 with a 1g GTE in (just). First, it has corona struts and vented discs on the front but original drums on the back. Is this OK?
The steering is terrible and has been modified (because of the auto box?). What shoud I use to replace it with ?
Does anyone know if I can squeeze an AC compressor in (I live in malaysia!). Cheers.

Start from the end I guess.
Every 1G-GTE I have seen has a A/C compressor bolted onto the engine. I have a spare a/c comp from a 1G-GTE if you can't source one over there.
Steering problems won't relate to the auto box, more likely trying to make the Corona struts fit, which are longer than the original TA22 units. I would look there first.
I have corona struts-vented disks and rear drums on my RA23. It works more than fine. Pedal travels further with the original master cylinder having to move a greater volume of brake fluid for the larger calipers. If this is a concern for you, upgrade to a T18 or RA40 master cylinder, both of which are larger (13/16ths) than your TA22 unit (at 11/16ths).
Tip for new guys: Use the SEARCH function and sit back and READ. This forum contains tonnes of information.
Good luck with it all.
Mitch.

Thanks mitch, AC compressor goes underneath the Alternator? I take it you have no clearance problems to the inner wing, the previous owner said he tried to fit one but couldn't get it in (he managed to get the condensor on the front though).
Steering - I get a tight spot every half turn and the bracket to the dash has been re-welded so i think I need to start again. the longer struts though....mine is low at the front, is the extra weight of the 1g enough to do this or can I assume it has different springs on? thanks

Lee,
It does on a GTE, not on a GZE, because that is where the supercharger fits ! No clearance problems that I found. You may need to lift the motor up to slide and then bolt the AC comp in there, but I doubt that.
Sounds like a worn steering box, may be time to rebuild / replace it.
The extra weight of a 1G will pull the front down lower on standard spec springs, be they TA22 or Corona, so I would keep an open mind about this.
Cheers,
Mitch.
