Would you buy an ex-cop SS?

Would anyone here (and yes I know this is a Toyota forum) buy a GEN 3 SS cop car?
I heard that they are really cheap if you buy them straight from the auctions. Does anyone know the prices they go for? Surely if they are cheap enough you could do all the repairs from 12months of thrashing with the money you would save. And who is saying only cop SS Comodores are thrashed and not everyday road car ones?
I read in another forum that the cop cars don't run cat converters?!?! Is this true?? If i ever get busted for not having a cat I can say the cops are a bad influence!!

I would'nt personally buy a SS full stop! But buying an ex cop car is just the same as any second hand car! I always need to presume that the car has been flogged! The only problem would be all the drill/screw holes! And most of the time the wiring under the dash is in such a mess! Exspecially after i've been at it Oh and for some reason the cops have a bad habit of leaving the windows down when its raining! All these things are easy to look for and easy to fix if its a problem for you!

The only ex-cop car I would even have bought was an ex-persuit vl (also country cop cars were highway speeding is checked) Rumour has it they are chipped and modded for speed. Also nowa-days you have a sky blue car than not everyone sees as a cop car
I remember a story about them. The cop was working on Nalibour Plains and when asked how fast it was, he smugly replied along the lines of: we've caught everyone who needs to be caught.

Yeah I don't think i'd get an SS either but the folks are keen on Commodores and if you could get a cop car cheap I think it's the way to go. I know someone who got a VS SS from the auctions in Sydney for $12,000 back when they were the new cop cars so even if you got one of the new ones for $20,000 it should be a good buy. THere is a VX SS downtown for sale (not an ex cop) for $48,000 with 40,000k's!!! $28,000 difference could buy you a lot of goodies!!

My workmates are into GenIIIs. Word is that ex-cop ones are the ones to get, or get a brand new one. The cars that give the most trouble (according to Holden mechs) are ones that have been driven gently, and then get bought by someone who drives it hard. Police cars obviously get driven hard from day 1.
Police cars are fully serviced as per the book too.

The interior may be a bit beat up though. They probably have to cart around a whole lot of unsavoury characters. It can't be as bad as buying an ex rental car though.

I think they get all the coffee and donut stains out though. But you might find a brown bag...
or a hidden camera...
When I bought my first ae82(used, 30000km), I found a sticker which said "This may only be a rental car, but it is your life". I traded it in the next weekend on a new one.

From what I've heard the ex-highway patrol ones are good to get as they are maintained well, since they need to rely on them.

A mate of mine brought an ex-cop VS SS and that thing hammers... I've heard that they remove the chip when they put it up for sale ... I wouldn't mind buying one later on but the downside of an ex cop car is Automatic transmission... Bloody cops, can't even drive manual...

Some individuals seen to be doing things right... I was at the Holden and Ford Show yesterday and was watching the dyno runs... I missed the twin turbo v8 commie ute but they announced that it pulled around 962 (or so) HP at the rear wheels... Fark!!! I'm pretty sure that that was the Morpowa Commodore Ute... There was also a pair of awesome VH's... Sweet sounding things... Also I was chatting to Jamie, the owner of the (PSYCO) Commodore Ute... That car is awesome... It was the first show where you could actually get up close to the beast... It had a mad Nintendo 64 set up aswell...

if you want a run down on the ford and holden show look in general forum under dyno as i just put a post in there as we had a car in the comp. i had a vp ss with 130k on the clock, manual, brand new susspension, brakes, new engine that had race cam's, port and polish, chipped, 10mm race leads, race extractors, 17's and walked around our 2002 model ss ute. i mean left it for dead. had it sice april and my wife wrote it of a month ago at 60kmh into the corner of a concrete block. it was a wild drift machine even with independant rear. but still it could never keep up with the rolla in the bendys. corolla feels like a go kart when you hope out of the ss into it. mick
p.s i bought her a 97 camry till the jzx100 chaser lands in oz.

Well I drive government cars HARD, actually BLOODY HARD is a better way to put it! Who would have thought a stock government VX is setup for a round of the ARC, straight from the factory! As for buying the cop car, anything can be fixed and lets face it, you'll probably drive the GEN III hard anyway. Good luck and enjoy!
Justin
VX with 10 km on the clock, lets take it easy boys, it still has to be run in. Yer right, get real............. Click click stomp!

i was told that highway patrol cars have longer gears than regular cruisers, so they wouldn't be as quick as a stocky from 0-60km/hr but after its got enuff speed it'll just fly.

They would only do that if they were getting near peak revs in top to make it worthwhile, and they should be terminating the chase before then anyway. They can go plenty fast enough already.

They have better things to do than to feel good by changing gears.
The less things they have to worry about while driving, the better. Have a think about it.

i dont know about an ss. but a mate of mine bought a genuine BT1 vl turbo ex-cop car. he picked it up for about $6,500. It flies, and i mean flies.. its gotsome bullshit chip thing... With the money he saved on it he slapped on a big cooler, mags, exhaust, BOV, and a stereo. all up its a fantastic car for the $10k spent. when buyin ANY car from an auction go through the usual steps, and if it appears to be all good, and u rekon u can save some $$$ in the process, then do it.

Yeah thats what worries me more about "normal" ex gov cars....people thrash them more than cop cars. Like cops don't get to take the highway patrol car home. It is always in service and if anyone saw a cop car out in the suburbs doing burnouts etc they would be busted BAD. Doesn't mean gov cars can't though. I go to uni and a few times we have been "in charge" of the cars. One trip we took a new then series 2 Acclaim out into some damn rough country in the Gold COast hinterland (we had the uni's permission) and couldn't get it to spin the wheels on the gravel roads....till we worked out it had traction control. When we left the uni gates it had 53km's on the clock...so much for running it in!!

I saw a REALLY nice GEN 3 Statesman (black) in the Brisbane auctions for sale part of the QLD Police Department. The body report (that all cars have up there) said that EVERY single panel had been damaged and replaced!! I wonder what happened to it?? And why do the Police need Statesmans & Caprices?

I have thought about it, but condiering the cops dont do more than about 160kmh (in vic anyways), they will only need to be in 5th from lets say 120 upwards, negating the need for gear changes, (assuming this chase is on a freeway or similar). How much better their control would be with a manual, we can only wonder... besides, before fully auto-boxes were put in the F1's, they managed to breech 300kmh with easy, same wiht the current champ cars.. I still fail to see why coppers cant drive manuals, or more to the point, dont. I should hope to christ that they have had brilliant training to make them confident and copetant at 160 clicks, and those of you who drive a manual, how much do you need to concentrate on changing gears once your use to it? effectivly never i should hope.
Thats my 2 cents
