ma70 knocking/clunking noise

Hey all,
had this knocking noise for a while now, just got louder recently for some reason, it stops when i turn the car off and the turbo timer takes over, turn the key back on and it comes back
i thought it was the auto g/box when it first started to happen, cos it would only do it in gear ( drive, 2nd, 1st and reverse) but now i reckon it may be the power steering pump or the like?!
cos it sounds like its on that side of the motor under the power steering fluid bottle.
i know its gonna be hard to help cos ya really have to listen to the noies it self.
EDIT: Could it be the oil pump? would that make a knocking noise if thats on its way out, or already gone? also, how hard is it to check it?
but any help/ideas would be great, thanks!
Geoff

hey dude it could be alot of things..what i can think of is the timing is out..sometimes it makes like a knocking noise/pinging noise, valve stems hitting the pistons and making a taping noise or even worse u could have a spun conrod bearing..except when uve got that its REALLY loud and really crap to drive..does it effect the driving or idle..or is it just a noise? i dont think the power steering or fuel pump would make such a noise but i couuld be wrong(most likly )
good luck man

"My car is making a noise. How do I fix it?"
Dude, it could be a body in the boot for all we know. We can all make wild guesses or you can take your car to a reputable mechanic for a professional diagnosis. Guess which option is more likely to yield positive results?

Who said anything about a performance shop? Unless you enjoy getting reamed, just take it to a normal mechanic. There's nothing special about an MA70 that requires the attention of a "performance" shop.

Hey might sound like a stupid suggestion, but a member on another forum had the same problem and traced it to a cylinder that wasnt firing (bad wire to the #5 spark plug)

10c all the stuff with only doing it in drive etc turns out to be only your perception and that actually it's the crankpulley. Mine (when it was 7m) did this, took it to a toyota dealer - they replaced all sorts of stuff (water pump, belts etc) and charged me a fortune but it ended up being the crank pulley.

yeah, start with the disasterous things first... like checking the crank pulley torque. missing cyls can go for a while with damaging anything. crank pulleys cannot.
also check your oil level and pressure (big end bearing)
engine and gearbox mounts
radiator fan mounts
water pump
alternator bearings
also, try the "piece of hose in ear" trick, see if you can localise the sound a bit better

thanks lumpy, i'll give that go, tho i did try and tighten that a while ago, but was that fucking tight, and couldn't stop it from turning either, pretty sure i had it in a gear too, how do i stop it from turning when doing it up?
as for oil level, thats fine, i only changed the oil/filter last week and have drove it once since.
water pump i replaced about 2 months ago, and engine mounts i replaced 5 months ago
will check fan mounts and alternator bearings on the weekend.
do i have to put a aftermarket oil pressure gauge on to check the oil pressure? the stock one a bit dodgy are they ED?
if the big end bearing has gone, will the crank pulley just be able to move around when theres no belts on? like will i be able to wobble the pulley if its gone? or is it harder to tell then that?

With the belts off the crank pulley (if knacked) will wobble from side to side slightly. It be tight onto the crank (ie the bolt is tight) but if the key/keyway is worn it'll always wobble. One the crank is worn the only real option is welding the pulley to the crank.

or do as i did, make a new woodruff key, and a bracket that goes over the crank bolt and bolts to the pulley (this bracket has a cutout in the shape of the crank bolt, wich prevents it from loosining) That was the end of my wobbling crank problems.
But i don't think geoff's knocking is related to his crank pulley.
Could be a too thin of an oil like i have put in my 7m (5w-50)which starts clanking in the head. whent away with a thicker oil (10w-40).
You should try to pinpoint where the knocking is comming from, could just be vavle clearances?

hmm..im using 10/30w pennzoil full synthetic.
im gonna borrow a mates stethoscope on the weekend and pin point where the noise is actually coming from.
also, just moved the car back this evening, and there was a oil/coolant mixture on the ground underneath!
yet when i changed the oil last week, there was no water in it, coolant level is perfect, hasn't moved a cm.
and my temp level is sitting just under half, has always sat there, never sat half way or over, its always just under
so iv got no idea where the leak came from!

could be big end bearing hence why you'r oil pressure will/could show low when infact u have plenty of oil..and yes also the oil makes a difference..although it should be alright considering u have the right oil suited to a turbo engine so i dont think changing it would be wise..unless it is harmless to do so? then sure give it ago..other wise like someone mentioned earlier could be the valve clearances..but seriously u must know of someone who is pretty machanically minded or a machanic or some sort to give more of a better diagnosis from actually hearing it..does it only happen from 2.5/3 grand and upwards? in 1st 2nd and 3rd?
thats all i can think of for now good luck dude

the oil level is showing full on the dip stick.
the car will make the noise driving or not, like takes a minute or two to start to make it after the car hs been started, but from there on, driving/idling you'll hear it
iv got a mate (machanic) coming down this weekend for a 21st so i'll wisk him away for an hour or two and see what he reckons it might be
