Head Gasket

Corolla is off the road ATM as the head gasket got beaten up.
While tuning the car for Dubbo we were unable to keep water in it (after a big boost spike and resulting detonation). I knew in my heart that the HG had gone, and yesterday I pulled the head and found that it was indeed blown (exhaust fumes coming out of the radiator is a bit of a clue ) . The last couple of weeks it had chewed through the water at a healthy pace (the doctors do recommend 2 litres a day).
This kind of serves me right though; I had not bothered to O ring the head in the rush to make Dubbo (Rod actually openly frowned upon this BAD decision).
Interesting thought though - 11.82 with blown head gasket? mmmm.
Today I am O ringing.
Can anyone recommend the use of a sealant to help keep the gasket alive?

you want something to keep the blown gasket working a bit longer or a sealant when you put the new gasket on???
if its for the new one just spray a thin film of Hylomar on each side... I dont think ive had a blown headgasket yet when using it, makes for a messy clean if you have to pull the head off again for any reason though.

HG is back in, the head has been o ringed. I used a light coating of spray on Hylomar.
3T RA40 - interesting note, I reckon that head bolt stretch may well be one of the flaws with the 3T. I cranked the down fairly tight, but not all bolts felt nice when they were pulled up.

Jason, what pound did you tighten head down to. When I had the motor built (the first time) they told me 75 pounds per square inch and this was with o-ringed block, standard head gasket and no reciver groove in the head for o-ring.
Since then I've changed to copper gasket when we rebuilt it properly with reciver groove now in the head and the guy from ridgecrest said to use the same torqe figure for head bolts as before.
Neil.

Yeh, that's what I meant, not 75 pounds per square inch , sorry just being blonde .
So, if I replace the head bolts should I take the head off completely and reseal head gasket or just redo the bolts? Can I reuse the same copper head gasket again?

I'd be very tempted to replace one bolt at a time if i was ONLY changing the bolts.

The only problem I can think of is if its opened up enough to let oil past a seal dose that mean that there is a possibility that oil will get past the seal again even with new head bolts?
Can I just reuse the existing copper gasket by resealing?

If you are going to open it up, then you will need to anneal the gasket prior to re-seating the gasket.
You are best to do it properly & remove the head and gasket, anneal the gasket, clean and re-seal.

Just got off the phone to ridgecrest and they said the same thing regarding annealing gasket. And I think for the time involved I will crack the head off and do it properly.

Come on, it's only 10 head bolts, and redoing the gasket .
As far as burning I leave that to you .
