Need info on AE86

I'm interested in buying a AE86 sprinter for my next project car, but i don't know much about them.
What kind of variations are there between models? Different options, different tail lights, bumpers etc?
Anything in particular to look for, special models, are they prone to rusting is certain places?
I'd like to fit a 3s-gte but as far as i know they only come out in FWD vehicles, do these engine bolt up to the W series of gearboxes or is an adapter required? Are custom engine mounts required? Other engine options? I'm after about 150Kw - 170Kw @ wheels reliable for club sprints and hill climbs.
Are L.S.D centers available for standard diff? Any other diffs that can be used without major mods?
Any other info is appreciated.

Mate, i would suggest do a search in the forums and search the web as a lot of this stuff has been covered
As for engine types people have fitted sr20det, 3sgte, 1g-gte, 4agte & other 4age types. I have a 1g in mine. Bolt in Lsd diffs are available but are very rare and expensive.

Check out the No.1 resource for the AE86 on the web which will have everything you ever need to know on the Hachi-roku ...
www.club4ag.com
I'll have to give you a hard knock if you don't find all you need there ...
This site's also great as well ... has a whole chart on what engines will fit in an AE86 if you took the time to check out this site. 4AGZE and 20V 4AGE's are the most common power conversions these days given their relatively straightforward conversion as opposed to a 3s-gte.
No ... Oz spec Sprinters don't come with the LSD's and Japanese ones are nearly non-existent these days. A Jap spec OEM LSD was just sold by an importer for $2100 couple of weeks back. You can modify a hilux diff but you still get the drum rears ...
I still find it puzzling that you want to do a project on this car but yet know so little about it. Don't tell me that you're an Initial D fan ...
Oh well ...

Thank you for the info.
The reason i'm looking for a Sprinter is I need a car to get to work and i'd like a good, cheap base for modifications later on.
I also miss my 22RTE powered Corona, so i need a new toy.

Don't forget that the 86 chassis can only handle around 200PS before you need to strengthen it.
Let alone if its turbo.

Which parts of the chassis needs strengthening?
My Corona made 160Kw @ wheels, after a year or two it tore one of the rear lower control arm mounts out of the floor. Is this the kind of chassis strengthening that's required or are there other problems?
