MA61-5ME won't start

hi, after replacing the fuel pump with a VL unit because the old unit decided to fail, the 5ME still does not start... <grrr>
i have:
checked that the AFM triggers the fuel pump - yes
checked for fuel - removed line feeding Cold Start Inj and much fuel flows when pump's on
checked for power at resistor pack - yes
checked all the EFI fuses & relays - yes
checked for power at ECU - yes (i think)
checked for spark - yes
checked for petrol on plugs - yes, there is none ;-(
all it will do is fire a few times from the cold-start fuel - but refuses to catch and run.
i don't know why the pump failed, but it's open-circuit and had a fair amount of crap on the inlet filter.
i blew the ECU fuse in box next to battery while testing for presence of power to the fuel pump - was replaced and is intact.
i couldn't really tell if the injectors were clicking as the engine makes so much goddam noise when cranking. Should i be able to feel click them with finger tips? or does it really need the screwdriver-touching-object-and-wedged-into-ear trick?
was i:
-supposed to 'prime' the fuel lines after they got air in them from being disconnected? (e.g. somehow evacuate the air?)
-not try to crank the engine so much when it had no fuel in the lines (oops)?
...anything else is should try before ringing a mobile mechanic?
tia, charles.

checked for spark? the ignitors are prone to play up and give a weak spark (bluey orange) that will drive you crazy looking for all kinds of problems!

spark was long & healthy from cyl 6 but will recheck...
anyone know what normal operating pressures are for:
VL intank (non turbo)
ma61 (factory unit)
the VL should be an easy replacement (even tho it's a lot smaller) as suggested by a few people?

i pulled plug on inj 5 - test lamp lit up when ign power applied
but both pins did - due to being hooked up for batch fire?
was going to check resistance of both inj lines at ECU?
seeing as ECU provides ground to inj's, it should go from hi-ish Z to no Z as it triggers? or will that happen too fast at cranking for my lowly (v.cheap) multimeter?
i'm also going to try wilbo's spare ECU, recheck the plugs, check the fuel filter and check flow at return line. if no joy, then mobile mech.
my spare injectors are 1G so the plug pattern is different - otherwise, i'd hook up on to see if is actually triggering injectors.

a cheap way to test injectors is to get a couple of leds
put htem in the injector plug
one leg per terminal on the injector
this way if the injector pusles the led should light up
also try starting thew car on aero start
if it starts thenu have a fuel problem
either injection or fuel supply
no one carries aerostart much
but it will save u many many hrs diagnosing shit
so many times unexperienced people hok up fuel lines wrong way and wonder y thing wont start
the main reasons a car wont start is either fuel or spark
spark can be tested with lead sparking on block
fuel is bit harder so aerostart down the throttlebody help diagnos much easier
just cause u have power or a pulse at the injectors does not mean u have fuel

The fuel lines were checked twice..There was plenty of fuel at the engine and power everywhere..All i can think of is the injecters not pulsing because power from the coil to say when to fire is not there

I can't suggest anything to check here, but I have a similar problem with my 1G-GZE and I am waiting for Sideshow to have a holiday in Perth and then I will get him to come over and have a look at my wiring loom from hell !
Cheers,
Mitch.
