I'm doing this at the moment for the first time, the front ones... Havn't finished yet but so far I have needed some spring compressors to take the strut apart and spanners/socket set to remove the strut from the car. Its not that hard to do, although the top nut is a bit difficult to undo... These are for an AE86, a taxi and a truck bent my strut the other day I was not at all happy...

I installed by own shocks on the Supra and they weren't too hard. It's probably easier with two people as heaving them back in place is a bit much for one if you want to protect your paint.
This web site has a good guide on their istallation in a Supra:

Changing rear shocks is a piece of piss in a car like yours, you can do it without dismantling the suspension... just unbolt the old shocks and whack the new ones in. Changing the strut inserts is a bit harder though. What I usually do it take the struts out, remove the springs (you need a spring compressor obviously), and send them to a suspension shop to have the inserts swapped. Shouldn't cost you any more than 20 bucks, which is worth it IMO.

A few trick's (for AE86 but may apply to other cars) Crack the damper rod nut (the nut inside the strut top) with the car on the ground. If you cannot undo it, drive to a shop with a rattle gun and ask him to.
When installing the damper, fill the cartridge with oil before immersing the damper in it (well have the oil a few cm below the top of the damper cartridge). If you don't, what can happen is the air inside the strut will act as an insulator from the outside air. When the damper is doing its job, it will heat up, and not being able to dissapate much heat, it will die.

Oh, and as Rob asked me: for AE86 factory springs YOU MUST USE SPRING COMPRESSORS. If you don't the strut top will be shot off the strut. The factory spring is VERY long.

yep I changed my springs and shocks on mine about a month ago... rear, extremly easy, unbolt and bolt new ones in basically.
Fronts not so easy as has been said. We couldn't get the top bolt for the inserts undone like the others. I had been given the whole strut so we just went, stuff it and changed the whole struts over hehe

That's why you want to crack the strut top nut with the car still on the ground.
It's a bitch.

on the ae82 i assume the same as the 86 from the talk on here the strut top retaining nut tends to feel like its springy or your bending something when u turn it. Just apply the brute force and ignorance rule to this and keep turning till it cracks if the cars on the ground it shouldnt be a problem

Is there any parts on a ae82 when changing the front struts that need lubing etc before putting them back in??
I'll will be change the front on mine hopefully in the next couple of days.
What do you guys think of the brand Pedders front pair for $100 NEW thats trade price but so it would be cheaper.

with mine when u kept putting pressure on the bolt it would just like jump, like the spring hopped out of position or something and popped back in. U would then put pressure back on it and it would do the same.
Thats why im guessing a rackle gun would work.

ya chuck the strut in a bench vice, clamp the springs, and hit it with the rattle gun!

Mine just cracked with a rattle gun after having taken them out (ie no vice). You really do want to try to have the nut cracked before taking the strut out. That way you can drive off to a mechanic to undo it. You can do it straight back up and drive home, just the initial cracking is friggin' hard as it was propably done up in the factory, or replaced by a mechainc and done up with a rattle gun.

Should just slide out Rob,
If your talking abou the nut/cap that hold the damper cartridge in: Just use really big adj spanner
Unless you have TRD cap/nut. You sort of need a small coilover 'C' spanner.
