How much freeplay should there be in the clutch? or is that just personal preference?

Is it better to have a low friction point (engages early) or a high friction point (disengages early)? if you know what i mean..

I'm guessing engage early as it'll ride the clutch for less time..

Higher pick up point is better (IMHO)
