my little 9500rpm incident

a while ago i went for a run in my liberty {1990 2.2L Stock as a rock, copper brake pads}
i had been flogging around the adelaide hills for about 20 mins when at the end of a long 3rd gear straight there was a tight left kink followed by a t-junction.
as i braked for the left hander, the brake peddle went long, so with no brakes left i shifted back to 2nd {from the top of 3rd} popped the clutch and pulled the sweetest four wheel drift you ever saw!!!
pity the old girl hit 9500rpm when it had a 6500 red-line!!!!

destroying an engine is far better than stacking a car.
Some guys in teh usa had hte same incident but didnt thinkg about using their gears to slow down: car = write off and they are lucky to be alive today

The motor spun a bearing about a month later. i must have streached a rod bolt or something, the car had only done 176,000kms

How is a rev limiter going to stop the engine revving if you (e.g.) shifted from 4th to 1st on the freeway????

well then my question is this, if the redline is at 600rpm then the tacho wouldnt go to 9500 now would it so how does he even know he was at 9500rpm besides you wouldnt stop to check your tacho if you were in a stiutation like that, im not sayings its entirely not true but parts of it are bullshit

Good point.... I just took it that his quote of 9,500rpm was a sort of guess/estimate or whatever.
In that case - HOW DO YOU KNOW IT WAS 9,500 rpm, tlmitf???

6500 redline, at a guess the tacho may go to 8500rpm, if it doesnt have a limiter and wound off the clock, mebbe he was just guestimating that extra 1000rpm?
its possible, but unlikely

reminds me of the time when i had my wippersnipper out and accidently down shifted it and it went of the gauge... I have a 18rc in a corona and i have been able to hit 9000rpm in it while standing still and reving it...Chain noise got worse though.....But 9500 for any doneup car is good but not sure it could happen like that.
