Scratched shim? bores - 2jzge head Tue, 01 June 2004 07:02 Go to next message
Apparently i must have scratched the bores when removing the valves and haven't seen it until now.

Well im pissed off, spent a long fukin time on this head

Someone please tell me these bores can be fixed, or i guess this is a throw away head.

EDIT: only affects 2 bores.

I am assuming that you are referring to the lifter bores?

I would just scrape the high points and give them a polish with very fine steel wool (NOT scotchbrite).

A little WD40 with the steel wool is good too.

I can lend you a scraper if you like (for this I would use a tri-angular scraper).

depends how deep and how bad.

scratches typically are only 'depressions' in the bore wall, and itll fill up with oil and have no consequence. its the high points next to the scratch that cause problems with gauling and wear etc. you can buff the high points down and everything will be fine.

a GOUGE as opposed to a 'scratch' however, will distort the bore more significantly, and thus render that bore useless untill remachined, ground, buffed etc.

i wouldnt be THAT worried about it... some 600grit (rubbed back on itself with wd40) and some cutting paste should fix it ok.

PICS??

cheers
ed

The reason that I use a scraper is that it can be used to remove the high points with pin-point accuracy very quickly, polishing second.

There was a time when white metal bearings were all hand scraped.

I am with Ed for the rest of it though - polish it so that the lifters move nicely, assemble it and do not worry about it again.

Jason, yeah lifter bores my bad.

Some are deep enough to have my worried, like you are describing ed, perhaps more of a gouge.

I shall take pics now.

I'm with these guys.....lightly scrape them flat and polish. Trial assembly to make sure buckets go up and down freely. Final assembly and forget.
