Gearbox problems

Hey all, first time viewer, first time poster, but dunkeymonkey told me to post here.
My 3rd gear is crap. I have a AE92, 1991 Corolla, 5sp manual. Now we've got that outta the way, here's the symptoms:
For years 3rd gear has made a hideous crunching noise going into gear. Recently it started not engaging. It would go "into gear" but when you release the clutch, it would "spit out" the gear stick. For some reason, rev-matching works.
Had varying opinions from stuffed gear box, to bristles, to synchros to selector. I'm stuffed if I know what the problem is.
Any help or comments?

Its the syncro's. Though now that you have driven it a long way since the problem first started, its likely to be that and a lot more as well too. Rev-matching gets you the gear as it 'removes' the job the syncro's do, matching the shaft spinning speed with the gear turning speed.....a-la a 'dog-box' (non-syncromesh g.box) in a race or rally car.
Drop the box and rebuild/swap in another.
Mitch.
