CAI Effects..... Tue, 01 June 2004 13:45 Go to next message
Hi Guys,

Well after some reading, searching and speaking to people, it sounds like a good idea to get some more cold air to my 3S-GE.

My thoughts were to run some kind of ducting from one of the side vents(as many SW20 owners do) to the airbox. I'm not too keen on running a pod filter, and the current standard airbox has a HKS filter in there.

So I was going to get 2-4" piping(depending on what fits), and connect it(somehow) near a side vent. Using a router, cut an appropriate hole in the bottom/side/top of the airbox and run the ducting into that.

That should/would get more cold air into the engine? This should increase performance a little bearing in mind I've got a high flow cat and dual(duh..) 2 1/4" exhausts.

I've also read that there is a small resonator box near or as part of the airbox, can this safely be removed? Does it need to be removed? I'm guessing this kind of mod is going to reduce fuel efficiency, give increased throttle response and a nice induction noise?

So does that make any sense? If I've already got this HKS filter in the standard box will running all this ducting be worth it?

It (the airbox) is mainly designed to reduce noise (NVH type stuff) from the intake, removing it may increase intake flow a bit, but it won't improve immediate throttle response (at least down low anyway). Removing the airbox and doing a CAI will improve flow - marginally - and also reduce the temperature of the intake charge which can be good for top end power if you tune the engine properly. It will affect fuel economy because it does help (sometimes) to have a slightly warm intake charge to help the combustion - technically it will make your emissions worse too. Changing intake charge temperatures affects the equillibrium point of all the emissions stuff, I think you get higher NOx emissions, I'd have to look it up sorry Sad

It all makes sense, and sounds like a well reasoned approach. The resonator box in the air intake ducting only serves to reduce induction noise, it gives no benefit to power or economy, so you can toss the thing.
Any mod that gets cooler outside air to the filter is worth doing, just don't expect any huge difference in performance from the seat of the pants dyno.
Mitch.
