Where can I get one of those really strong brick magnets? Tue, 01 June 2004 22:26 Go to next message
I would like to stick one, on, and then later, in, my sump just to ensure the oil is free from metal filings etc etc.

I think this is a good idea, but am a little unsure of where to source one of these magnets from and am having trouble finding one.

Any help appreciated! Smile

Edit: lol, yeah, and it's gotta be small to Wink

Pull any old hard drive apart (the huge really old ones are best), they have uber-strong magnets inside.

Yep, they are very strong magnets. I *think* they are identical to hard disk magnets as Norbie mentioned. I've got a few lying around that I'm sticking to my oil filter next time I do a change.

and my favourite, cos they are just down the road and let me play with their magnets Wink
http://www.magnetic-force.com.au/

the neodymium ones should be ok for what you need... strong, small, and nickel plated.. just dont use them in reducing atmospheres Wink, 10mm dia x 3mm = $0.96, or 8mm dia x 5mm $0.96

i use the 8x5's.. strong little fuckers Wink not so good for fridge magnets unless you have strong fingers.

they are good to abut 80deg C only.. if you need higher temps, then go for the samarium cobalt ones..
10mm dia x 3mm = $3.10

AlNiCo are far better for temp (550) but are exxy...

specs http://www.magneticforce.com.au/Specs.htm

hard drive are typically neodymium, and are good.. but they are also pretty fragile... if you let two neodymiums slap together, you can shatter them.. part of the reason they have nickel coatings Wink

hmm, i wonder if they can send magnets thru the post Wink

oh, and can you tell i've looked at this before? Wink needed some for 'adverse atmospheres in furnaces' at uni Very Happy
