Hey people..Has anyone expirimented with or have an opinion about high temp coatings on piston crowns and combustion chambers and anti friction coatings of piston skirts. Are they worth the money/effort for what they do?
My unlimited love to you all..................Chris

they are only worth the money on things like exhaust and exhaust housings the rest like piston skirts and crowns are if you have plenty of money to throw around or you are chasing lap or 1/4 mile times. once you get to a set point with all engines horsepower wise chasing extra HP starts to cost a huge amount of money.

Toyota see the value in ceramic coating the crowns & teflon coating the skirts of (standard) GZE pistons, so it must be worth something, but I imagine it would be a whole lot more cost effective when coating a few thousand pistons rather than just 4 or 6 or so.

would be useful if running a turbo/boosted engine - but maybe not for NA? depends what/how you're running the engine

for turbo, it helps by:
-reducing heat transfer to head & piston so oil/cooling system is under less stress
-reduces residual heatin combustion chamber
-increases gas pressure/temp following combustion - which improves performance/output of the turbo (hotter/faster gas reaching the turbine)

one downside is higher temps at the exhaust turbine which could be point of failure for turbine wheels that easily fail at higher-than-normal tempretures.

plus you should also consider coating of interior of exhaust manifold and probably interior of exhaust turbine housing. Otherwise, you may create more unwelcome hot spots...

Joel, i believe the 4AGZE pistons only have a ceramic coating on the crown, and down to first ring. they do not appear to have any coating on the skirts, apart from some oxide from being heated during the ceramic coating process..

the cost of coating the pistons etc at HPC is not huge, and if ypou are already spending $400 or so coating the dump pipe and exhaust housing of a turbo.. whats a little more Wink
