Toyota rally car

If one was looking to have a dab at rallying and wanting to use a Toyota, what would be a suitable car?
It would be in production class so no engine conversions would be done. So the car would also have to of come with an engine that can be built to go alright.
Anyone have any ideas?

im going to say the obvious
a GT4.....
st205... i hope u have alot of money!
LOL
no on the serious note if you can get your hands on the old gt4 the first gen i think st165 or something around that they are chaep just very hard to find, but if u are going to rally it it dosnt have to rd registered so in saying that you can import a gt4 for cheap and u dont have to comply it.

I think I missed something in the first post
One other requirement is that it has to be cheap. It also has to be relatively small and light. Something that has a good balance would be nice too.
So this rules out all the the GT-Fours, TA22, RA23, RA40. The AE86 could be good, but I doubt I would find one cheap enough to want to strip it and flog it around.
Whats a TE27 and 37
Whats a KE35? Someone suggested one of these?

ae86trueno wrote on Wed, 02 June 2004 19:25 | Any Motorsport costs LOTS of Money,
so it all depends on your budget.
I personaly wouldnt buy a 4WD rally car first off
I would suggest an older RWD celica/corolla or a slightly newer FWD corolla/levin if you have a little bit more money to spend.
Depending on how much money you have an older car can auctually be driven much faster then 4WD turbo Celica!!!
AS much as there fun they are big heavy and expensive.
There are 2 main clases cars fall in PRC and Group N (well 3 if you count Group A which doesnt really exist anymore) Group N is for newer cars and are very Restricted as to what you can do as you have to follow the Homologation Papers to the letter, and then there is PRC which is basically everything else.
if you build a pre 1986 car you can prety much to what ever you want to the engine/car, but after that date you are a little bit more restricted as to what you can do with things like inlet manifolds and injection systems and lots of other stuff.
Woops and yes you have to run prety much with the engine that was available for that car, ie yes you can run a 4AGE in a sprinter but no 20V as there is 4 valves too much.
Having said that just go out and buy a car that is ready to run will save you $1000's
Go do some club stuff like supersprints to see if you auctually like it and want to be broke for the rest of your life.
My Completely unbiast advise
rally a sprinter

Good advice but not all of it applies to me. Well it does but meh.
My engineer rallies escorts so I was thinking something along these lines, but Toyota. I could go out and buy an Escort all setup with a bullet proof engine for $10k but then would have to spend a few $k more to set it up for me.
I was advised to buy a rolling shell as rust free as possible for a cheap as possible. Rollcage, tank and such are as easy as pie. Major expensive for me would be building an engine.
All up I wouldn't want to be spending much more than $12k, and then this would be over time.

just to fuel a few arguements
St165's - for rally or road use only - 4 K ish
St185 - as above 6k ishSt185 RC ( or group a carlos sainz ) 7.5K
St205 - Group A - 12 K ish
All running
All moderatly available
Re ta22's ive seen some tough 2tg ta22 rallycars, and the earlier corollas too
Both make good cheap blasters IMHO over the whole sprinter thing

KE35 with a worked 2/3T.
Or KE70/AE71 with a worked 4A.
A pre-loved example of one of these, already built for rally, should only set you back a couple of grand.
It's a good place to start. And you won't be crying when you crash it.

Go for a later model than a KE25.
KE25 was different to a TE27 in a few ways.
The rear end was tubbed in the factory on a TE27.
Also, the rear diff was stronger.
Front suspension and brakes as well as the rear brakes were different ie larger and the steering box was different as well.
The front and rear guards were radialized at the factory for the bolt on flares, so that would mean some cutting on a KE25.
Instrument panel was different, as well as the centre consol.
Also had 13 inch tyres from the factory compared to the 12 inches for the KE.
Just some of the differences off the top of my head, and from memory when i owned a TE27.

Buy Andrew Vibert's Rolla (CVAP) thing is a missile!! KE30 with 2TG, won VRC P3 last year, won just about every rally it entered, and I think he was looking at some thing newer.
I also know there are a few ex-rolla cup cars, AE102,(N3) still around, and I spoke to a couple of guys who just bought their's and there going for around $6K ready to race... bargin as the suspension only are worth $5k (proflex) 2nd hand. if upgrading to P3 these then become very expensive keeping the 7A... BUT these will be able to run a 20V now due to a 40 page report I submitted to ARcomm last month, they had never seen a submission like that, a verbal/email OK was issued, the paper side is just being sorted. The report incl 20V conversions that I have done, the different 20V models available in Jap, exact measurements of the X-members, under pinnings etc.. It really blew them away, but was just general knowlegde to us guys here!! Nothing new.. anyway, Advanatages, Freedom in exhaust and inlet, but not stroke and only allowed a 0.6 increase in bore.... and way better than a 7AFE.....But Coming down to ultimate tinkering... the AE86, The rules are as Ben said, Imagine a stroked and bored, Big Port, 4AGE running quad injection? It'll have my car shakin' in it boots when comparing Hp, My 7A only makes 110Hp@wheels and lugs around a 1000kg shell, but the AE86 shows some 160HP+ potential with those rules..... you'll need some big and hairy's to drive that flat out

I was going to ask you if your going... we'll need to compare top speed over some of those stages... From memory, one read FMR 5Km, RGL,RGR, FMR 5Km....
I've got you in my sights next year, we're dropping down to P2 20V will be a nicer engine... At least I got mine sorted compared to last years problems...
should say at the wheels... sorry left that out

Ive never done Bega before, so this will be fun by the sounds of it. I was going to run smalled Diameter rear tyres to get some more Torque but by the sounds of it i wont have to.
gee 160+ HP at the wheels are some mighty big numbers for a small 1600 im still 20-25kw off that.

A Friends IP car makes this, very suprised as it runs relative small cams and 10.5:1 comp, very streetable... but everything is TRD

Penhorwood use to run this back in '99... we ran our as N3 and we had exact same stage times for most of the rallies, he did sell it and it was on sale here at the end of last year.

Ever wonder why it's so popular? every time there is over 100 cars running and the council send the graders out weeks in advance I'm starting to drool very different to 2GO and Bathurst.
